PETERBOROUGH, ON- Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup sophomore Mike Nelson will be back at Peterborough Speedway this Saturday, August 9th for his second career Sportsman appearance at his home track.
The former Mini Stock standout will enter Round 5 of the tour in search of his first career LOSC victory amidst very familiar surroundings.
“I’ve been looking forward to this race all Winter”, explains Nelson, “Peterborough Speedway is home. Always has been. This is the first time in my LOSC career in which I’ve felt as though I have an advantage over the competition”
“I know every groove and crease in that racetrack”, continues Nelson. “I’ve got a tonne of laps there, and I really feel as though that will be a difference maker for us on Saturday night”
The Peterborough, ON driver currently sits 7th in tour points, just 16 markers removed from the top-3 and is riding a streak of three consecutive top-5 finishes.
“We’ve been able to rattle off some really good runs at tracks that I’m pretty unfamiliar with. That gives us a lot of confidence coming home”, says Nelson. “This car has been awesome this season. I’ve been lucky enough to have John Baker Jr. helping me behind the scenes, and his expertise has really taken everything to the next level”
“The series points are incredibly tight right now. A lot is going to be decided through these next few races. A good finish at Peterborough is paramount for our season”
Nelson goes on to explain just how much Peterborough has meant to his racing career, and how excited he is to return home with the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup series.
“I would have never gotten started in this sport if it wasn’t for Peterborough”, offers Nelson. “My dad used to tech here. I would stand with him in turn-1 and watch the races when I was 5-years old. That’s when I first knew I wanted to be a racecar driver”
“Coming back now is a lot like having my career come full circle. My first laps around Peterborough were in a Four Fun car. Now I’m with the LOSC. It’s been an awesome ride. If I could get my first win there, in front of my family and friends, it would be a career highlight”
