#CBRT25 – @CBRTinc – #NCATS – The NASCAR Canadian Tire series concluded the yearly swing through western Canada with a stop at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway near Saskatoon, SK on Wednesday evening. Canada’s Best Racing Team (CBRT) with driver Joey McColm at the wheel were in contention for the victory in the late going and although coming up a little short they still claimed another excellent result.
The #25 CBRT Dodge was quick all day during practice and the team was confident heading into qualifying. Recording the eighth quickest time was positive but the team was actually a little disappointed.
“We’re now expecting to start a little closer to the front each time out” said McColm.
When the 250 lap feature race began McColm was able to move forward quickly in the field. A couple of early caution periods slowed the field and also gave the #25 CBRT Dodge team a chance to work their race strategy.
“We made an early stop for fuel and felt it would help us with track position later” explained McColm.
The strategy worked perfectly. McColm continued to improve his position and as others made stops the #25 CBRT Dodge took over the lead of the race for the first time on lap 80.
“Being out front felt great” said McColm “and we showed we had the pace to stay out front for quite a while” he added.
As the race progressed the #25 CBRT Dodge team again made a pit stop earlier than others, this time for fresh tires.
“We felt it would again work out in our favour” said the driver.
The race ran green for a long stretch in the second half and McColm was pushing hard for third position when a late caution flew. Several cars made stops for fresh tires and McColm restarted the race for a green, white, checkered finish in first place.
In the closing laps the racing became very intense and the #25 CBRT Dodge was shoved aside by drivers with newer tires. McColm gathered up the car and still managed to claim a sixth place result.
“It got pretty crazy at the end” said the driver. “But we led a bunch of laps, we learned a few things about running up front and we’ve built a lot of positive momentum in this team. We’re really excited about where we’re headed in the second half this year” he stated.
With back to back top ten finishes out west Joey McColm now sits eighth in the overall championship standings.
