August 31, 2014. Bowmanville, ON. Steven Mathews returned to action in the #87 TSC Stores Ford this past weekend for round number nine of the NASCAR Canadian Tire series on the famed road course at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP). Mathews as always showed great speed and skill behind the wheel, an unfortunate break cost them a better result.
On track action began with practice and qualifying on Saturday and Mathews felt right at home in the #87 TSC Stores Ford.
“The car felt really comfortable right away” he stated.
While many competitors only ran a few qualifying laps Mathews ran a couple more and it paid off as he improved his position.
Mathews lined up for the 51 lap feature race in row nine and as always looked to improve his position. Things were going well for the #87 TSC Stores Ford team until a tough break hurt them during a scheduled pit stop. Mathews was ruled to have exceeded the pit road speed limit.
The penalty for this infraction is a drive through pit lane during green flag conditions at the correct speed. As soon as the penalty was service Mathews was on a charge in the #87 TSC Stores Ford to try and regain as much track position as possible.
“It’s kind of frustrating to have that happen but we tried to make the best of the situation, quite a few other guys were nabbed as well so we were able to fight back.”
Through the balance of the race Mathews used his skill to collect every position possible and came home with a 16th place result, two positions better than where he started.
“It’s not great but it could have been worse, I’m glad we were able to fight back” said the driver.
“I want to thank the whole #87 TSC Stores Ford team for again giving me a great car to race and working hard all weekend. This is a really great group of guys and I’m proud to race with them” said Mathews.
