WALKERTON, ON- Sauble Speedway frontrunner ‘Marvellous’ Marvin Freiburger will be back in action this weekend at Sunset Speedway’s ‘Velocity 250’. The two-day event will pit Freiburger against over 30 of Ontario’s best Late Models, in a 75-lap race widely renowned as one of the toughest to win in all season.
“This is one of the weekends that we truly look forward to all year,” smiles Freiburger. “As soon as the schedules are released, the red marker comes out and we circle this date. The stands are always overflowing, the campground is packed to the brim and you can’t find a place to park in the pits. It’s perfect. It’s the absolute perfect racing weekend. I get excited just talking about it”
The Walkerton, ON native won the 50-lap Thunder Car portion of the Velocity on the undercard of the event in 2008, and hopes to add a podium finish in the Late Model main event to his resume this weekend.
“We won this race back in our Thunder Car days, and it was by far one of the biggest wins of my career,” reminisces the fan favourite. “If we could roll in this weekend with our Late Model – against the absolute best teams in the province – and walk out with a podium finish, I’d be over the moon. It would mean the absolute world to my team and I. Sunset is renowned for its talent, and when you toss in some of the teams coming from across Ontario for this race, it might be the toughest of our season”
But, despite the obvious pressures associated with a Crown Jewel event like the Velocity 250, Marvin underlines the importance of having fun at all times.
“Our team works really hard to keep this car running as close to the front as possible, but it’s important to remember to have fun,” explains the business owner and grandfather. “That’s our number one goal when we unload at one of these races. Because, you’re there for an entire weekend. So, if you aren’t enjoying yourself, it’s just like having a job. None of us are out here doing this professionally – so it’s always important to find a way to enjoy yourself. Because if you aren’t smiling at the end of the day, there’s no sense in doing it”
‘Marvellous’ Marvin has dedicated the entirety of his 2015 season to raising money for Easter Seals, and will enter the weekend having raised over $10,000 already.
“I can’t help but look back on this season and feel proud of what we’ve accomplished,” says Freiburger. “We picked up a win against some of the best weekly racers in Ontario, and raised a lot of money for some kids that need it the most. That’s what we’re all about. We love testing ourselves as a team, and we love helping the people in need. Hopefully this weekend we can continue doing both of those things.”
