BAILIEBORO, ON- Former Kawartha Speedway Thunder Car champion Matt Spence will make his long-awaited Limited Late Model division debut at Peterborough Speedway’s season opener on May 17th.
“This is a dream come true”, beams Spence. “I’ve wanted to do this my entire life. Our whole team has been counting down the days throughout the entire off-season”
‘The Sidewinder’ rattled off his first practice laps in his newly acquired chassis at Peterborough’s May 10th testing session.
“You can prepare all you want over the off-season, but you won’t know what you have until you hit the track”, says the Rookie of the Year contender. “This chassis has been through a complete disassembly and reassembly, with new parts thrown in the mix. All told, we were very happy with the way the car performed in practice”
“There are a lot of components to this car that I’ve never worked with before”, continues Spence. “So, a lot of our success is going to hedge on how quickly I can adjust my driving style. There’s a lot more control and adjustability with the Limited Late Model, compared to what we’re used to with our old Thunder Car”
Despite the upgrade in equipment, Spence is confident his Matt Spence Racing team will be able to find their stride in their new division.
“In practice, it didn’t take too long to get used to the transition”, explains Spence. “After 50-laps or so, it started feeling pretty natural. That’s good for our entire team. Because, if I can’t get a feel for the car, it’ll be incredibly difficult to communicate to my crew what adjustments need to be made”
When asked his feelings entering his first career start, Spence admitted he was surprised at his lack of nerves.
“I didn’t think I could ever be this excited. I just want to get to the speedway. There’s no anxiety – yet”
The freshman maintains his 2014 campaign will be based around improvement and testing himself as a competitor.
“We just want to get to the point where we can get better every Saturday as a team”, says Spence. “I can’t wait to see where we end up after our first night. There’s no truer test than when you line up with your fellow competitors. I’m very much looking forward to racing with some of the guys I’ve never competed against, that’s what’s going to keep this season fun”
Matt Spence’s Peterborough Speedway debut will take place this Saturday May 17th. Admission is free to all fans, thanks to Peterborough’s ‘Fan Appreciation Night’. Gate times for the event can be found at www.PeterboroughSpeedway.com
