PORT COLBORNE, ONTARIO… Gary Lindberg from Ridgeway, Ontario won the 20th edition of the Trevor Wilkens Memorial for the DIRTcar Sportsman at the New Humberstone Speedway on Sunday evening. For Lindberg, it was his seventh win of the season.
Billy Hogue from Dain City, Ontario picked up his first win of the season in the JC Auto Street Stocks feature event. Kyle Rothwell from Welland, Ontario picked up his third Trackside Decals Mini Stocks feature of the 2013 season. Sam Pennacchio from Niagara Falls, Ontario claimed his third Mike Knapp Ford Pro 4 Truck feature of the season. Olivier Larocque from Port Colborne, Ontario picked up his fourth Frontier Auto Dismantler Pure Stock feature of the season. James Thompson from St. Catharines, Ontario and Brandon Iudiciani from Welland, Ontario picked up the rained out feature events for the JC Auto Street Stocks and the Trackside Decals Mini Stocks respectively.
Cody McPherson and Mathieu Desjardins led the Cosco Haulage DIRTcar Sportsman to the double green flags for the Trevor Wilkens Memorial for the Sportsman Super DIRTcar Series and it was McPherson, a former Mr. DIRT Sportsman Champion showing the way. 2013 track champion Gary Lindberg was on the move early on as Lindberg entered the top ten on lap two. Greg Panunte got around Desjardins for second on lap five as Joey Ladouceur entered the top five just as part of the field created a multicar pileup on lap six. On the restart, Lindberg continued his way to the front as he went three wide to enter the top five and then passed Austin Wood for fourth place. Lindberg then went underneath Desjardins on lap 10 to move into the top three. On a lap 11 restart, Greg Panunte took command of the field after passing McPherson on the outside of turns three and four. Lindberg went underneath McPherson on lap 14 and moved into the runner up spot. The leaders hit lap traffic on lap 20 and it was then when Lindberg passed Panunte for the race lead. At the halfway point, Lindberg continued to show the way over Panunte, McPherson, Desjardins and Adam Leslie racing in the top five.
Greg Panunte and Cody McPherson battled for second while going through lap cars but it was Panunte keeping the runner up spot. James Michael Friesen brought out the caution on lap 39 setting up a 11 lap shootout. On the restart, Lindberg kept the lead as McPherson went underneath Panunte for second place just as Adam Leslie and Austin Wood moved into the top five after passing outside pole sitter Mathieu Desjardins. Martin Pelletier spun in turn three to bring out the caution on lap 43. Lindberg and McPherson led the field back to the green flag and it was Lindberg rocketing passed McPherson but Lindberg pulled away to pick up the victory. McPherson, Panunte, Wood and Leslie completed the top five. “Its cool to finally get the win in a trail race here” stated Lindberg. “We plan on going to Brighton and maybe Syracuse later this fall” Lindberg continued.
Roy Crawford and Shawn Wilson led the JC Auto Street Stocks to the green flag for their 20 lap feature event and it was Wilson showing the way on the opening circuit. The field went three wide and four wide on the opening go around as James Thompson was on the move early on. Thompson took over third and then went after Billy Bleich for the runner up spot as Bleich went to the outside as Bleich took over the lead on lap three. On a lap six restart, Thompson went to the outside of Bleich and Thompson took over the lead on lap seven. Bleich went back underneath Thompson and regained the lead on lap nine as “Silly Billy” Billy Hogue took over second at the cross flags. Hogue then went to the outside of Bleich for the race lead on lap 11 as the field of Street Stocks were stacked up and the top six were right there for the lead. The lead duo of Bleich and Hogue went side by side for several laps as Hogue went to the outside as Bleich held the bottom. Hogue took the lead on the white flag lap and held off Bleich, Thompson, Paul Reichel and Jason Fontaine to pick up his first win of the season.
Dave Small and Kurtis Wiley led the Trackside Decal Mini Stocks to the green flag for their 15 lap feature event and it was “the Big Guy”, Dave Small with the lead at the end of the opening circuit. Kyle Rothwell moved into second and then on lap three, passed Small to take over the lead. Tyler Lafantaisie passed Small for second and began to chase down Rothwell. Leroy Buscumb brought out the races first caution on lap nine after spinning in turn four. On the restart, Rothwell and Lafantaisie pulled away. Mike Sadusek and Kurtis Wiley both barrel rolled down the front stretch on lap 10 and landed in turn one after hitting the front stretch wall. Both drivers were ok and walked away from the scene under their own power. On the restart, Rothwell continued to show the way and Lafantaisie went side by side on the last lap and it was Rothwell edging out Lafantaisie, Pelrine, Goulding and Aaron Wiley completed the top five.
Andy Imbeault and Hilary Haegens led the Mike Knapp Ford Pro 4 Trucks to the green and it was Haegens showing the way. Colton Ledingham and Sam Pennacchio, fresh off a win on Friday evening at I-88 Speedway, raced his way into third. The top three pulled away from the rest of the field as Ledingham went underneath Haegens for the lead on lap 11 with Pennacchio moving into second place with Hilary Haegens falling back to third. Pennacchio went underneath Ledingham and grabbed the lead and held off Ledingham for his third win of the season.
Brad Booker and Kyle Tomaski led the Frontier Auto Dismantler Pure Stocks to the green flag for their feature event and it was Booker showing the way early on. Brad Alward spun on the front stretch to bring out the caution on lap three. Olivier Larocque pulled away off the restart and had a half track lead until Marcel Beauregard spun to set up a one lap dash for the cash. Larocque pulled away from Booker to claim his fourth straight and fifth overall feature of the season.
Shawn Wilson and James Thompson led the JC Auto Street Stocks for their rained out feature event with Thompson showing the way at the end of lap one. Thompson got loose and Wilson was able to regain the lead at the end of lap two. Thompson was able to retake the lead away on lap three as Cory Turner moved into third. Bill Bleich moved into second on lap six as Thompson was able to get away from the field. Bleich tried to reel in Thompson but Thompson was able to pick up his fourth win of the season.
Leroy Buscumb and Brandon Iudiciani led the Trackside Decals Mini Stocks to the green flag for their make-up event from September 1st with Iudiciani leading the way. After Brandon Boychuck slowed the field down on lap five, Iudiciani kept the lead as Tyler Lafantaisie, Kyle Pelrine and Kyle Rothwell looked for the lead. Evan Curtis, after being involved in a early race spin, worked his way back through the field and entered the top five on lap 10. Iudiciani held off Lafantaisie and Evan Curtis for the victory.
HUMBERSTONE NOTES:. Rocky Thompson was awarded the 30th and final qualifying spot for the Sportsman Super DIRTcar Series event after Travis Miller, who got in on a track provisional spot had mechanical issues on his number 22 ride. Car Count Report for September 8th: 34 Sportsman, 16 Street Stocks, 11 Pro 4 Trucks, 20 Mini Stocks, and 7 Pure Stocks for a total of 88 cars pitside. The final checkered flag flew over the field at 10:15pm.
Racing returns to the Port Colborne oval on Sunday September 15th as Motorsports Image presents the Mike Knapp Ford Safecracker 100 for the Sportsman. It will be the final points night of the season for the Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Pro 4 Trucks and Pure Stocks. Double Features for the Pro 4 Trucks and Pure Stocks will also round out the card. Gates will open at 4:00pm for both the pits and the grandstands and racing will begin at 6:00pm sharp. Just two weeks away from the Eve of Destruction as destruction starts at noon while grandstand gates open at 10:00am and pits will open up at 8:00am for pre-race inspection.
