May 27, 2013- The comparison may not be immediately obvious, but the sports of short track stock car racing and bowling have a lot in common. In each case, the goal is to find something that works well and do it over and over again toward the ultimate reward. Racers chase a trip to the winner’s circle and an eventual track championship, while bowlers search for consistency and a perfect game.
After starting the 2013 Canadian Tire Motorsport Park Speedway season with a 3rd place effort in the Late Model feature, Linc Brown was looking to maintain at least that same level of performance during the second night of action when the green flag waved Saturday, May 25th. Armed with a positive attitude, the 47 year-old speedster from Colborne, Ontario rolled his #99 Dodge Charger by McColl Racing Enterprises to the starting grid and as any racecar driver – or beer league bowler – will tell you, an optimistic stance can make all the difference in your overall performance.
“We had a great night last week and that’s exactly the way I wanted to start the year,” said Brown while prepping his ride for action. “It wasn’t perfect and there were some things we needed to change on the car that will hopefully make it better, but I’m happy with how things turned out. If the team can maintain the same focus and work at getting a little better and accomplish more each week, I think it’ll be a strong year.”
In the night’s first qualifying round, Linc Brown started 6th and made it to 4th at the checkered flag. For his second heat, a front row starting spot resulted in a trip to victory lane. While they waited for the feature event to take to the track, the driver and his crew – including daughter Bailey and son Mason – went to work on getting the car ready for the 25 lapper that would close out the night.
As the Late Model field left the starting blocks for the main event, Brown was lined-up on the outside of the front row. During the pace laps, his mind flashed back to the previous week’s finish and what could have been. Just as quickly as those thoughts entered his memory, they were replaced by the task at hand. From the drop of the green flag, his ride was strong but once again he was denied a trip the winner’s circle, finishing second in the final run-down.
“I’ll never say that we ‘settled’ for 2nd, but we didn’t have anything for the #55,” conceded Brown after the race. “Whatever ground we might have gained by driving deeper into the corners was quickly given up coming off the turn. The car was still way too loose. I tried adjusting the bias to add some rear brake and that helped a little, but not enough. The Late Model division isn’t on the schedule next Saturday, so we’ll get out the notebooks and look for a set-up that’ll push us into that next position. I think our team is capable of winning the track championship. We’ll keep working hard to accomplish that goal.”
