HAGERSVILLE, ON- Longtime Thunder Stock standout Lee Winger will look to make his first career 360 Sprint Car start this Saturday, when the Patriot Sprint Tour rolls into Merrittville Speedway for the 2015 edition of the Spring Sizzler.
After years spent inside the cockpit of a full-bodied stock car, Winger is ready to take his first forey into open wheel competition one step at a time.
“I can’t wait to strap in and roll off for hot laps,” smiles Winger. “We’re just taking it slow. Focus on hot laps. Then get through time trials. Then we’ll worry about racing our way into the show”
“I have a world of respect for the guys on the Patriot tour,” continues the soft-spoken up-and-comer. “I’ve had the pleasure of watching them for a long time, and I’m aware of the level of talent I’m going to be competing with”
“For us, all we want to do is keep all four wheels on the ground and find a way to race our way into the show”
Though Winger has competed at Merrittville for years, the Hagersville, ON driver has yet to score a victory there. However, Winger is quick to explain that the tight 3/8-mile oval drives far different in a winged Sprint Car.
“The best we ever finished at Merrittville in the Hoosier Stock was 3rd – it’s the only place I can’t seem to figure out,” offers Winger with a laugh. “It’s a whole new ballgame with the Sprint Car, though. The way the wing and the big right rear impact the car is something I’ve never experienced before. Saturday is going to feel like we’re starting from scratch at Merrittville.”
