INNISFIL, ON- Third generation racer Brandon McFerran enjoyed his second win in as many weeks on June 7th at Sunset Speedway, completing a last-lap, last-corner pass for the lead after charging from deep in the field.
“I think we had horseshoes tonight”, beamed McFerran in victory lane, “everything went our way”
The Acton, ON driver started 16th on the grid – by virtue of winning the Mini Stock event on May 31st – and worked his way through heavy traffic for the majority of the 25-lap A Main.
“This car was a rocket tonight, I can’t thank my team enough. I was able to put this car wherever I needed to, which helped out a tonne when we were back there racing three and four-wide through traffic”
‘The Astronaut’ breached the top-5 with a handful of laps remaining, as leaders Ben Melenhorst and Miles Tyson battled at the front of the field.
“I was a few car lengths back of the leaders, but I could see them going at it”, explained McFerran. “Those two were going to war for the spot, and I knew something had to give eventually. I was just driving my guts out trying to catch them”
The battle came to a boiling point on the final lap, when the leaders made contact and knocked each other loose, opening the door for the hard-charging McFerran.
“I was heading into turn-1, while they were working off of turn-2”, said McFerran, “and I saw [Miles] Tyson get into Ben [Melenhorst] and knock him sideways. I knew that was my chance. So, I got back to the throttle as quick as I could to try and jump on the opportunity”
McFerran completed the pass for the lead in turns 3 and 4, as the field was cycling around to the checkered flag, earning the 15-year old his second straight division win.
“That wasn’t our race tonight”, admitted the humble high-school student, “that was Ben and Miles’ race. But, they got together and that was all we needed to catch them”
“I’ve had a couple taken from me, just like this, the past couple seasons”, said McFerran. “So, I’m alright with picking one up this way. It’s better to be lucky than good!”
