NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FL- 16-year old Denver Foran returned to Super Late Model competition at New Smyrna Speedway’s World Series on February 17th, eager to break into the top-10 for the first time in the 8-night mini-season.
The Edmonton, AB native continued his rapid improvement through the afternoon’s practice sessions, working with Crew Chief Jeff Fultz on a number of set-up changes intended to maximize the potential of Foran’s newly acquired Lefthander by Shear chassis.
“We’ve had a little difficulty with set-up all week”, admitted Foran. “Jeff [Fultz] is so great at what he does, and we’re just working together to find the right combination that works for New Smyrna”.
Foran opened Night 4 with his best qualifying effort of the World Series, pacing the Central Florida half-mile with a time of 17.747 seconds.
The 2013 Dakota Dunes Western Canada Super Late Model series champion made good use of his 4th row starting position, running within the top-10 for the entirety of the 35-lap main event.
With one lap remaining, Foran found himself in a heated battle for position with fellow rising star Joey Mucciacciaro for the 7th position. Entering turn-3, the pair made contact, with the end result sending Foran sideways in front of the second-half of the field. Though he would manage to keep the car away from the inside retaining wall, Foran would surrender his hard-earned track position, ultimately settling for a 17th place finish that was not at all indicative of the team’s efforts.
“There’s nothing we could have done about what happened on the last lap. It’s all part of racing”, mused Foran as the team loaded up. “I’m really happy with the way the race went. We passed a lot of cars”.
When asked about the team’s set-up combination for Night 5, Foran explained “We haven’t made many large scale changes. It’s been a lot of little things. Nothing’s perfect, so we’ll keep making changes and trying to make our car as fast as possible”.
The Super Late Model division will enjoy a night off on February 18th, before returning to action for Night 5 of the World Series on February 19th.
