BOWMANVILLE, ON (May 19th, 2013)- Jeff Lapcevich rolled into Canadian Tire Motorsports Park on May 19th with a brand new, mostly untested chassis, and left with a second-place finish that equaled a career best with the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.
After a solid 10th place qualifying effort on Saturday afternoon, Lapcevich’s Fastline Motorsports worked through the evening to prepare the McColl Racing Enterprises-built Dodge for 51 laps of action on Sunday.
“We made a lot of changes Saturday night. Hats off to my entire team for improving our set-up the way they did”, said Lapcevich. “We adjusted a lot of little things, and it worked out great!”
Working from his 5th row starting position, Lapcevich battled feverishly through the field, strategically picking off spots throughout the event, putting his Tim Hortons Dodge within striking distance of leader L.P. Dumoulin with only two laps of competition remaining.
Pulling to within Dumoulin’s back bumper, a slight bobble in Turn One would set Lapcevich back several car lengths, with the Grimsby, ON veteran running out of laps before the distance could be closed once more.
“I knew I was better than him through the twisty stuff, and I tried something there in (turn) One with two laps to go that sort of backfired on me and gave him a pretty comfortable cushion”
Lapcevich was quick to credit his crew, who prepared the new car on short notice, after the Fastline Motorsports team mourned the passing of family patriarch Joe Lapcevich mere weeks before the season.
“It’s hard to be too disappointed with a second place run after all that we’ve been through these past six weeks, but I wanted this win badly” admitted Lapcevich post-race. “This car had less than 10 laps on it before the green flag and I’m still not completely satisfied with it, but I know Chris [Couvillon] and the boys will get it better. I think we’re going to be strong contenders this year”
Lapcevich’s Tim Hortons/Castrol/Cathcart Trucking/Troy Cove Marine/Springer’s Meats supported entry will return to action when the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series visits Delaware Speedway near London, ON on Saturday June 15th.
