July 7, 2013. Castrol Edge Dodge driver DJ Kennington has never claimed to be a road racing expert. Though he’s scored previous road course wins turning both left and right isn’t his forte. However in round number four of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Kennington showed championship form securing a solid finish at Circuit ICAR to maintain his lead in the overall championship standings.
As usual the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge team’s approach to practice was to learn as much as possible about the track and how the car handled the hot, slick conditions. Though he posted times inside the top five during practice qualifying didn’t go as well and Kennington would line up ninth for the 100km event.
“It was tough just to get the right rhythm and decide on the correct gears and shifting” explained Kennington.
As the green flag waved on the field Kennington looked to find that pattern and began to turn very consistent laps. With a long green flag run the field became a little strung out but Kennington continued to push the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge.
“It was pretty tough to gain any ground” said the driver. “I just had to be patient and wait for our chance.”
As the race laps ticked away Kennington would find opportunities and pounce. The race was slowed by a late caution and the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge would move further forward after the restart and Kennington would claim a sixth place result.
“We always try to be at least in the top five on road courses but didn’t quite get there, but we’ll take this. We’re on top in the points and headed to the western races. We swept the west last year and I can’t wait to get back to those tracks” he stated.
Kennington has finished in the top ten in all four races this year and holds a two point’s advantage over second place in the overall standings.
DJ Kennington and the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge team are back in next July 13th at Motoplex Speedway near Vernon, BC.
