BOWMANVILLE, ON (May 19, 2019)- DJ Kennington and the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge team debuted the new road course car at the opening round of the 2019 NASCAR Pinty’s Series this past Sunday. The Castrol Victoria Day Speedfest at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP) has been the traditional opening event for the series and Kennington produced his usual solid results at the famed road course.
In addition to the new car the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge team and other competitors were using General Tires for the first time in competition presenting a great number of performance questions for the team.
“For so much to be brand new the whole team did a great job preparing the car,” said Kennington. “We got better each time out during practice”.
Kennington would post the 10thfastest time during qualifying in the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge and begin the Clarington 200 from the outside of the fifth row.
“My plan here is always the same” explained Kennington. “Be consistent and try to have something for the end of the race. It’s served us well in the past” he added.
True to form Kennington moved the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge up a couple of positions in the early going and then stayed in touch with the front-runners. After stopping early for fuel and with caution periods slowing the field several times the team decided to come down pit road and change tires just before halfway.
With service completed for the day the task now was in the hands of Kennington who piloted the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge back toward the front once again.
“Things seemed to be going okay for us, but when we had a couple more cautions and late restarts it didn’t work out” he explained.
The #17 Castrol Edge Dodge became difficult to handle in the late stages, partly due to older tires. Despite the adversity, Kennington used his skill to claim an eighth place result.
“I think we were a top five car for sure,” said the driver. “It was a bit tough on right hand corners for some reason, we’ll sort it out for our next trip here”.
“Great job all weekend by the Castrol Crew though, we had a little bobble on the right rear during the pit stop, but they hustled and sorted it out.
“It was great to have so many race fans here this weekend, this event that Castrol and CTMP put on just keeps getting bigger every year, amazing”.
