HAGERSVILLE, ON (June 2, 2019)- DJ Kennington showed plenty of speed in the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge during the second round of the 2019 NASCAR Pinty’s Series this past Sunday at Jukasa Motor Speedway. While Kennington ran among the top three much of the day a cut down tire late in the race relegated him to an eighth place finish.
Kennington was the winner in last seasons final Pinty’s series race at Jukasa Motor Speedway and quickly showed his #17 Castrol Edge Dodge would be a force to contend with again this year. Posting quick times during Saturday practice he qualified with the second fastest speed to start on the front row for the 200 lap main event.
“We knew what we had last year and came back with pretty much the same set up,” said Kennington.
Rain showers on Saturday would postpone the race until Sunday. Shortly after the green flag waved Kennington pushed the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge forward and into the lead on lap four and stayed there until lap 71. Stopping for fuel during a caution period he would surrender the top spot but quickly moved back toward the front of the field.
“I didn’t push too hard at all, we had lots of power under the hood and we focused on being there for the end of the race,” stated Kennington.
In the closing laps Kennington was running in second position when he began to feel something amiss with the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge. The right front tire had suffered a puncture and was disturbing the handling of the car. Finally it deflated completely and almost sent Kennington into the outside wall. “What a shame” said a frustrated driver afterward.
Kennington would bring the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge to pit lane and the crew quickly changed the right side tires and Kennington was back on the charge to push for every position in the closing laps. He would take the checkered flag with an eighth place result.
“Should have been a podium finish for us today but some bad luck with the cut tire” stated Kennington. “But we survived to grab a top-ten and we know this team is going to be contending for wins going moving forward this season. We’re all pretty pumped to get back at it in a few weeks” he added.
DJ Kennington and the Castrol Edge Dodge team return to next on Saturday June 29 at the Autodrome Chaudière in Vallee Jonction, Quebec.
