GEARY, NB – On Sunday at Speedway 660, Justin Cole (#38) ended a winless drought that dated back to 2019 and did so in dominating fashion during the Targett’s Windows and Doors Street Stock 100. Cole battled with Brodie MacQuarrie (#28) for the lead in the early laps but pulled away from the field on a 55-lap run to the end to earn the big win – the first extended distance win of his career at Speedway 660 – and make himself an early favourite for the upcoming Ricky Bobby 150.
After technical inspection, a pair of drivers who made the long trip to Geary, after competing at Riverside International Speedway in Antigonish on Saturday, rounded out the podium – former winner of the Targett’s Windows and Doors 100 Michael Cormier (#68) came home second, while former track champion Riley Goodwin (#77) would be scored third. Andrew Rodgers, subbing for Rick Cashol (#54), finished fourth, while Darcy O’Neill (#68x) rounded out the top-five.
After starting on the pole, Cole led the opening lap before MacQuarrie took control of the top spot on lap four. The #28 car would hang onto the lead until Cole overtook him on lap 27, a lead he would not lose the rest of the race.
The Targett’s Windows and Doors Street Stock 100 was slowed by two cautions, both for single car spins by Shawn Hyslop (#99) and Ron Enkel (#52).
Eighteen Shur-Fit Automotive/Bumper to Bumper Street Stock competitors were in attendance for the Targett’s Windows and Doors 100, but Jimmy Sommerville (#5) did not start the feature after suffering a mechanical issue during heat races. Justin Cole and Ron Enkel started the day off with victories in 10-lap heats.
Dave O’Blenis padded his feature wins total and commenced a bid for a seventh career Re/Max East Coast Elite Realty Pro Stock championship at Speedway 660 on Sunday, as he scored a commanding win in the 75-lap feature to kick off the 2023 season for the division. O’Blenis led wire-to-wire to pick up the win. While O’Blenis drove off into the sunset, it was a tense battle for second all race long that saw Hudson Weston (#43) emerge in the runner-up spot, earning his first career podium finish by outdueling veteran Kevin Moore (#88). Clark Moore (#54) rallied to finish fourth, while Ian Rasmussen (#81) came home fifth after he and Weston battled for second during the first half of the race.
Seven Re/Max East Coast Elite Realty Pro Stock competitors were in attendance for their first points race of the 2023 season. O’Blenis took the checkered flag in the 10-lap heat race. One caution came out for a single car spin by Calvin Rankin (#45), who did not finish the race.
The victory adds to O’Blenis’ impressive career feature wins total, including over 44 in the Re/Max East Coast Elite Realty Pro Stock division at Speedway 660.
Daniel Atyeo (#15) overcame some early season misfortunes to finally pick up a feature victory at Speedway 660 in 2023. Fast every week thus far, mid-race mechanical issues plagued the early portion of Atyeo’s season, until Sunday. It wasn’t easy, as Atyeo had a fierce battle with Ryan Bernard (#68) for much of the race. Bernard would settle for second, with Austin Harnish (#13) settling for third after entering the battle for the win late, as the leaders worked through lapped traffic. Evan Gallon (#9) would drive to a fourth-place finish with two-time defending champion BJ Gillespie (#69) rounding out the top-5.
Twenty Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooter competitors were in attendance. Heat races were captured by Daniel Atyeo (#15) and Ryan Bernard (#68). The 30-lap feature ran caution free.
The victory was the fourth career Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooter victory for Atyeo.
Chris Wilson (#2W) is undefeated in Atlantic Modified Tour competition at Speedway 660, as he won his second feature of the year in the Geary Woods in a competitive 35-lap feature. Wilson came out on top of a spirited battle with Braxton Stafford (#91), which saw the two battle side-by-side for the lead. Wilson took the top spot for the final time on the 17th lap but would have to hold off Stafford on a late restart with eight laps to go. Yves McCray (#58) attempted to capitalize on the late restart to steal a victory, but settled for the final podium spot, while Doug Matchett (#75) edged out Joe Hoyt (#17) for fourth.
Ten Atlantic Modified Tour competitors were in attendance. Miramichi drivers Braxton Stafford (#91) and Doug Matchett (#75) captured victories in 10-lap heat races. One caution came in the 35-lap feature for a spin by Matchett.
Wilson’s victory is the sixth of his career at Speedway 660, moving him ahead of Joe Hoyt for most Atlantic Modified Tour wins at the track. Official results will be published by Atlantic Modified Tour management.
The St. Louis Bar and Grill Intermission featured the first Power Wheels race of 2023 for the youngest drivers. So many entries showed up that the field was split into two races!
