HILLSBURGH, ON – As the chase for the 2015 Sunset Speedway Mini Stock championship intensifies, it seems as though drivers up and down the roster have their eyes glued to their place in the standings. However, with only five points nights remaining on the schedule, contender Jordan Howse insists his strategy of placing wins ahead of points racing remains unaltered.
“We’re not even thinking about the points heading into Saturday,” explains Howse, almost defiantly. “I just want to win races. That’s what I feel my job is on this team. That’s my only concern”
“If it turns out that we’re back in the points lead on Sunday morning, that’s cool,” adds the soft-spoken teenager. “But, my attention is on winning the feature on Saturday night. That’s all”
The 16-year old’s three feature wins in the month of July allowed Howse to close in on the upper-echelon of the Mini Stock point standings. But, despite sitting just 8 points out of the division points lead, Howse insists his focus does not extend beyond returning his No. 72 to victory lane tomorrow night.
“I do my best to remove myself from any kind of distractions on race day,” says the son of former Flamboro Speedway champion Paul Howse. “I’m not worried about where we are in the standings or who’s closing in on us. All I care about is getting a feel for what the car is doing and communicating it to Dad as best as I can. That’s what makes our team work so well”
Howse credits Sunset’s brimming Mini Stock roster for keeping him motivated and driving him to continue elevating his second-year program.
“There are more threats to win now than there has been all season,” notes the former Karting standout. “This whole field is full of drivers that are able to put together a really strong night. That’s what motivates me. There isn’t the luxury to get lazy in this division – because if you start slacking off, you don’t have a hope of running at the front”
“I just want to win. That’s our focus,” adds Howse. “We haven’t won in two weeks and it feels like it’s been an eternity. This division advances every Saturday. Every team out here gets better and better. We’re advancing with them, and we’re hoping to turn in our best performance ever this weekend.”
