WATERLOO, ON- Third-year Mini Stock competitor Jake Watson has announced he will team with SMG Motorsports’ Sean Grosman for the 2015 Sunset Speedway season.
The third-generation racer will return to Sunset on a fulltime basis as the first member of Grosman’s upstart SMG Motorsports Driver Development program.
“We met Sean last year, and from the moment he first walked into our pit area he’s been one of the most supportive guys I’ve ever met,” said Watson. “To have him behind us this season is a huge vote of confidence”
“I just feel lucky beyond words. From the moment I strapped into a Go-Kart, I’ve had the support of some incredible people. It makes the good days better and the bad days a lot easier. I’ve picked up so much knowledge on the technical side of the sport from guys like Ken Spira and Randy Shaw, to now add Sean to our program is unreal. It’s humbling to have all these brilliant guys looking out for me”
For Grosman, supporting the 13-year old allows him an avenue to give back to the grassroots short track community.
“Some of the most enjoyable nights of my adult life have been spent at Sunset Speedway,” said ‘The Frequent Flyer’. “My family fell in love with the speedway the moment we walked through the gates in 2009. I’ve been fortunate enough to support a few drivers over the years – and as soon as I met Jake and his Dad, I knew I wanted to become a part of their program”
When asked about his hopes for the 2015 campaign, ‘The Derringer’ is quick to explain that his lone goal for the season is to continue his improvement in Sunset’s perennially competitive division.
“I just want to keep learning from everyone around me,” explained the well-spoken middle-school student. “There’s so much talent in this division that running in the top-10 on a nightly basis is a huge accomplishment”
“We finished top-10 in championship points last season and I would love to build on that this year. If we could work our way into the top-5 it would mean the world to me”
“My Dad works so hard on this car and all I want to do is make him proud,” continued Watson. “I’m not worried about where we finish every night, as long as we have a good time.”
Watson’s family-owned Ford Mustang will hit the track for the first time this season on May 2nd when Sunset Speedway kicks off their 2015 schedule.
‘The Derringer’s upcoming season is made possible thanks to the support of Spira Fire Protection, Race2way.ca, Hype Energy Drink, London Recreational Racing, GUNK, Wix Filters, The Landing Strip of Toronto, Academy Construction, TSS Top Shops, SMG Motorsports, OKTANE Productions, Fast Eddie Racewear, Glencoe Automotive, For Your Eyes Only, Protein2O, AquaHydrate, Stewarts Root Beer, AR Bodies, Falken Tire, Artik Ice, Dominion Sure Seal, Chetty’s Hot Sauce, Cloverleaf Farms, Lucas Oil and Expressway Ford.
