WATERLOO, ON- Third-generation racer Jake Watson has not finished a Sunset Speedway Mini Stock feature inside of the top-10 since July 19th. However, even in the face of his biggest slump this season, the personable teenager remains positive and upbeat entering August 29th competition at Sunset.
“I don’t think it’s any secret that we’ve been in a bit of a rough patch for the last month,” says Watson. “It’s not going to last. These things never do. It just feels like it will. We’re going to work our way out of it”
‘The Derringer’ and his family-run team have relied heavily on their support system of marketing partners and volunteer crew to get them through the Sunset Speedway season. A fact that is not lost on the personable 14-year old.
“I can’t thank our sponsors enough,” offers the Waterloo, ON product. “Not only have they stuck with us, but a lot of them have stepped up and offered help to pull us out of this tailspin. [London Recreational Racing founder] Mike Schmidt came through with four fresh tires for us two weeks ago – which is absolutely incredible”
“If it weren’t for our marketing partners, this team wouldn’t exist,” adds Watson. “It’s tough to explain just how much they mean to us. I wouldn’t be doing this without them. I owe everything to our sponsors, my team and my parents”
When asked when he sees his luck taking a turn for the better, Watson wastes little time in pointing out that August 29th could very well be the performance his team has been waiting for.
“With a little bit of luck, this is a top-10 car on any given night at Sunset,” says Watson. “We’ve been close to a top-5 more than a couple times this season, and we just need to remember that. It’s easy to get down on yourselves when you’re in a slump, but we have to remember that we’ve had some really solid runs this season”
“Right now, we just need to stay positive,” continues the teenager – showing maturity beyond his 14-years. “This setup combination has worked great for us in the past and we’ll be relying on it this Saturday. One strong finish could turn everything around for us. Hopefully we can make that happen this weekend.”
