In the July 31st edition of Spencer Lewis’ Short Track Notebook, we update you on OSCAAR Super Late Model standout Andrew Gresel, Laird International Raceway Modified pilot Justin Jones, Delaware Speedway veteran Jamie Grover and Flamboro Speedway champion Billy Schwartzenburg. We also break out the video camera and catch up with Josh Gruntz and Davey Terry, and ask all about the OSCAAR Modified Tour!
OSCAAR Super Late Model tour winner Andrew Gresel has announced via his @SaubleFalls81 Twitter account that he will make his first career Super Late Model start south of the border, when he looks to qualify for the $20,000-to win Summer Sizzler at New Paris Speedway on August 1st. Gresel will make the 680km haul from his shop in Hepworth, ON to the New Paris, IN speedplant, with hopes of becoming the first Canadian to join father-and-son combo JR & Tyler Roahrig, CRA Super Series legend Scott Hantz and Michigan standouts Jeff Ganus and John Long on the list of Summer Sizzler race winners. Gresel’s experience on the tight confines of Sauble Speedway will serve him well, when he tackles New Paris’ tight ¼ mile surface. The Sauble Falls Racing team will compete Thursday night, travel back to Ontario and Friday, and compete in Round 7 of the OSCAAR tour at Peterborough Speedway on Saturday night. Sponsorship for Gresel’s venture to New Paris will come from Sauble Falls Tent & Trailer Park, London Recreational, Canadian Union of Skilled Workers, Overland Heating & Cooling, McRobert Fuels, Spira Fire Protection, Shoreline Property Management and HY-Grade Roofing.
Sault Ste. Marie driver Justin Jones has sent along this shot of his Open Wheel Modified after a horrendous wreck last Wednesday (July 24th) at Laird International Raceway. The car made heavy contact with the backstretch retaining wall, effectively destroying its entire front end. Videographer Tom Stephenson has posted footage of the wreck to his Youtube account, the video can be found here.
Delaware Speedway Super Stock veteran Jamie Grover has confirmed that he will be in attendance at Sunset Speedway this Sunday (August 4th), for the Innisfil, ON 1/3 mile’s 50-lap invitational event. The Glencoe, ON driver will make his first career Sunset Int’l Speedway start, alongside Sunset veterans Randy ‘The Rocket’ Rusnell, Lane Zardo and Paul Maltese. Marketing support for Grover’s 2013 season includes Bob Pearce Trucking, London Drive Systems and Ultimate Custom Fiberglass.
OSCAAR Modified Tour fan favourite Josh Gruntz will make his first start of the 2013 season this Saturday (August 3rd) at Peterborough Speedway. The former Kawartha Speedway Thunder Car regular has made a number of changes to his McColl Racing Enterprises-built chassis over the off-season, in preparation to compete alongside point leader Brent McLean, defending champion Gary McLean and the rest of the uber-talented tour roster. We caught up with Josh recently and asked him about his plans for the rest of the season, his opinion on the ever-changing tour landscape and what drivers have surprised him through the first half of 2013. The insightful 1 on 1 can be found on our Youtube channel or by following this link.
Multi-time Mini Stock feature winner Billy Schwartzenburg has announced via his team’s @SpiraRacing86 Twitter account that he will be in action tonight (July 31st) at Sauble Speedway’s Dash for Cash event. The Guelph, ON driver won at Sauble earlier this season, and will return to battle local front runners Kevin Bridge and Kevin Paupst in the extended-distance event. Here’s a look at what’s left of 11-year old Jake Watson’s front end, after a rough and tumble Sunday affair at Flamboro Speedway. The Mini Stock feature, won by multi-time champion Dave Bailey, included a number of incidents that slowed its pace. Youtube user PetalPower51 has uploaded footage of the event that shows just how rough it was for some drivers. Check it out here.
