In the August 2nd edition of Spencer Lewis’ Short Track Notebook, we preview a packed weekend of racing featuring NCATS star Jason Hathaway, Late Model legend Rino Montinari, open-wheel standout AJ Emms and Pro Late Model sophomore Dale Shaw. We also speak with OSCAAR rookies Corey Jones and Lane Zardo, and profile some fantastic on-board footage provided by 4-time OSCAAR tour champion Glenn Watson.
NASCAR Canadian Tire Series star Jason Hathaway will return to his short track roots on Sunday, when he straps into a Ltd. Late Model fielded by sophomore driver/owner Nick Goetz. Hathaway will join a number of divisional standouts including Stompin’ Tom Walters, Mike ‘Lights Out’ Bentley and ‘The Bully’ Dwayne Baker in Sunset Speedway’s ‘Dilley Dog 75’ invitational event. The native of Dutton, ON will enter the weekend in search of his first career Sunset Int’l Speedway win. The NG Motorsports-owned ride will carry sponsorship from Great Lakes Concrete, Fast Eddie Race Wear, Choko Motorsports, Shoreline Beacon, Kincardine News and Adam Weir Contracting. Current NASCAR Canadian Tire Series crew chief – and former multi-time Late Model feature winner – Rino Montinari will step back into active competition this weekend, for the first time in several seasons. Montinari will make his Mini Stock debut at Sunset Speedway, competing on Saturday and Sunday evening in a car fielded by current Rookie of the Year point leader Shawn Gerrior. The Allure Hair Creations-sponsored Dodge (above, by Pamela Guppy) will race alongside current weekly point leader Warren Paxton, defending champion Eric Yorke and 14-year old Mini Stock standout ‘The Astronaut’ Brandon McFerran. After an impressive 7th place finish in the Lucas Oil TQ Can-Am Modgets event Barrie Speedway on July 20th, open-wheel standout AJ Emms (above, by Paul Husby) has confirmed he will once again be in the field when the club heads to Sauble Speedway for a pair of shows this weekend (August 3rd and 4th). Emms will join Rob Neely, Adrian Stahle and a host of other club regulars, as they look to put a stop to Mack Deman’s incredible run of 4 victories in 6 starts. We caught up with OSCAAR Super Late Model rookie Corey Jones (above, by Pamela Guppy) post-race at the recent tour event at Sunset Speedway. The Canadian Vintage Modified standout spoke about the transition to the high-horsepower Outlaw Bodied Super Lates, his plans for the rest of the 2013 season, his Rookie of the Year hopes for 2014 and his relationship with tour veteran Shane Gowan. 4-time OSCAAR Super Late Model Tour champion Glenn Watson (above, by Pamela Guppy) has posted some fantastic on-board footage of his recent outing at Sunset on July 28th. The 50-lap event, eventually won by ‘The Bully’ Dwayne Baker, featured some fantastic close-quarters racing captured by Watson’s well-placed camera. The 20-minute video is well worth the view, and can be found here. Watson would finish 4th.

After winning both ends of the Sauble vs Sunset ‘Home and Home Series’, Thunder Car division standout Smokin’ Joe Adams (above, by Pamela Guppy) has announced he will return to Sunset Speedway this Sunday, in search of his 5th checkered flag of the season. The 2012 Autumn Colours Classic champion has won twice in his last 3 Sunset starts, and will look to outrun defending Sunset champion Randy Rusnell, current Peterborough Speedway point leader Matt Spence, fan-favourite ‘Cowboy’ Dan Price and a slew of other top-tier competitors in the 50-lap affair. Pro Late Model sophomore Dale Shaw (above, by Debbie-Jo Zardo) is in for a busy weekend. The second generation driver will race in weekly competition at Flamboro Speedway this Saturday (August 3rd), before hitting the road for Sauble Speedway’s Beat The Heat 150 event on Sunday night (August 4th). The Guelph, ON youngster, son of former ALSTAR Super Series titlist and multi-time Flamboro champion Jason Shaw, will enter the Sauble event in search of his first career Late Model victory outside of his hometrack.
