PETERBOROUGH, ON- With one week remaining ahead of Peterborough Speedway’s 23rd annual Autumn Colours Classic, promoter JP Josiasse has announced a brand new headliner to the speedway’s Friday night show. At the conclusion of Friday’s heat races, the speedway will host two Young Guns Showcases presented by APC Auto Parts featuring the top young talent in the Mini Stock and Thunder Car division.
The 20-lap dashes will invite Thunder Car drivers 25 and under and Mini Stock drivers 21 and under to compete for a pair of one-of-a-kind trophies, prize money and bragging rights that will last an entire season.
“For us, the spirit of this event is to make things bigger and better with each passing season,” explains Josiasse. “The people that come through the gates here are the best fans in the country, and we wanted to put together a special attraction for Friday night as a way to thank them for their support and patronage. I have all the confidence in the world that these two races could easily become one of the highlights of the entire weekend”
The APC Auto Parts-backed showcases will act as a prelude to Charlotte and the Dirty Cowboys . For Josiasse, the introduction of the two races are an indication of just how vibrant the short track scene currently is in Ontario.
“The scene in Ontario right now is incredibly fortunate to have the young talent that it does,” says the veteran promoter. “I can’t remember a time in which we’ve had so many young drivers out making a name for themselves. This event will give these teams, and their rising stars, a chance to see where they size up against one another. We hope for this to become a part of the Autumn Colours Classic for seasons to come. In ten years from now, I can’t wait to look back and read the names of the drivers that have come along and won these showcase races”
When asked about the inaugural showcases, Peterborough Speedway General Manager Dave Sikma immediately saw the races as a rare opportunity for drivers to further fine-tune their rides ahead of Sunday’s extended-distance main events.
“These two races are not only going to give these drivers a chance at showcasing their abilities in front of one of the biggest crowds they’ll see all year, but it will also provide them with a chance to log some track time ahead of their heat races and features,” offers Sikma. “Because we have so many divisions and so many racers in the same place at the same time, it’s often pretty tough for newcomers and youngsters to get a feel for the speedway at ‘the Classic’. This is the perfect opportunity for these teams to get some extra track time – in race trim – to get their programs to where they need them to be”
“The way I see it – this is the ultimate bragging right,” continues Sikma. “We’re going to take the best young talent in Ontario and see who can figure this place out first. It’s the perfect way to headline the first night of the biggest weekend of the season.”
