PORT COLBORNE, ONTARIO….. With the untimely death of Humberstone Speedway Owner Pete Cosco, the decision was made that the Sunday August 31 racing program will not be taking place.
The entire racing community was stunned to hear the passing of Pete. He always had a smile on his face and would share his racing stories to anyone that would listen. Pete was certainly one of the “nice guys in racing” and would help anyone that would need it in the pit area.
Pete’s driving career spanned two plus decades. Pete has had several top drivers race for him over the years including Don & Jeff McGinnis, Stewart Friesen, Adam Ferri and the late Trevor Wilkens. Currently, Chris Steele, Rob Ledingham and grandson Jordan are behind the wheel of the #17c with Fred Flintstone holding a checkered flag on the number. Pete also enjoyed watching his grandsons Dylan and Tyler race in the Mod Lites and go-karts.
Besides running the New Humberstone Speedway, he owned and operated Cosco Haulage in St. Catharines, Ontario. Alongside wife Linda, the family purchased the New Humberstone Speedway in 2004 and started their era in the tracks history in May of 2005.
Words cannot describe how we are all feeling after hearing of Pete’s passing. The racing family is a tight-nit group. We laugh together, we cry together, we race together, and we grieve together. Racing is truly a family sport and we lost a great man whose zest for life will forever be in our thoughts.
Pete is survived by his loving wife Linda, children Joe (Tricia) and Tanya (Bobby) brother Ron (Karen), sister Leena and sister in law Donna (Larry) and grandsons Jordan, Jacob, Dylan and Tyler. Also surviving are his nieces and nephews. Pete was pre-deceased by his parents Joe and Maria, sister Sally, and Linda’s parents John and Ruth Saltarelli and brother Tom.
Calling hours will be held from 2-4pm and 7-9pm Friday August 29, 1-5pm Saturday August 30 and the memorial service will be held on Sunday August 31 at 2:00pm at the Pleasantview Memorial Gardens and Visitation Centre on Merrittville Highway (HWY 20) in Fonthill, Ontario.
As an expression of sympathy, the family would appreciate that donations will be made to Children’s Make a Wish Foundation. Online condolences, photos, and memories may be shared at www.pleasantviewcemetery.ca
A special tribute to Pete will take place on Saturday night at the Merrittville Speedway.
Racing will return to the Humberstone Speedway on Sunday September 7 as Cosco Haulage will present the Trevor Wilkens Memorial for the Sportsman Super DIRTcar Series, A full Humberstone weekly racing series program will also be on the card.
