PORT COLBORNE, ON – In the Cosco Haulage DIRTcar Sportsman series, Mark Chiddy and Dave Flannigan Jr. took the front row at Humberstone Speedway. Both Flannigan, who had a meeting with the front stretch wall last week at Merrittville, looked no worse for wear and Chiddy, who has had a terrible year so far in 2012, took off on the green flag with Chiddy getting the lead coming out of turn two and then holding it for the first lap. Flannigan took the point for the next three laps, surviving two caution flags for spins, but then Chiddy retook the top spot on lap four and held off all comers. It wasn’t as easy as it sounds though, as Flannigan was on his tail for most of the first half and then Cody McPherson would shake loose from the pack and challenge Chiddy. With no other cautions to bunch the field, Chiddy did get out to a sizable lead but McPherson made up considerable ground to make it close coming to the checkered flag. Chiddy finished with the first win of his career, McPherson was second and Gary Lindberg was third. Fourth was BJ Willard and Flannigan held on for fifth. Heat winners were Chiddy, Lindberg and Austin Wood.
In the 20-lap Peters Excavating FASTRAK Late Models, Don Spiece had the pole position alongside Kenny Winfield. On the green, Spiece took the early lead coming out of turn two and then checked out on the field, holding the lead for the first thirteen laps. All the action was behind him with Adam Ferri having a good battle with Winfield and Zack Carley. On the thirteenth lap, there was contact between Jordan and Darren Peters in turn one with Jordan getting the worse end of the deal and bringing out the only yellow flag of the race. On the restart, Peters outran Ferri to get second and then got by Spiece on the next lap after Spiece went too high in turn four. Peters then cruised on to the victory with Ferri in second and Carley in third. Fourth was Tim Gillespie with Spiece hanging on to fifth. Heat winners were D. Peters and Carley.
Starting on the pole for the first time the year was Chris Duschene with Tyler Anderson beside him for the JC Auto Street Stocks race. On the green, Duschene grabbed the early lead and held it for the first three laps with a horde of Camaros behind him. Paul Reichel was able to separate himself from the horde and move up to second and then take the lead away from Duschene by lap four. The only yellow flag of the race came on lap 7 for a spin by Shawn Wilson in turn two. His Camaro didn’t want to restart, so he was pushed back into the pits. It was a bad night for tires as Barry Blanchard and then Jason Fontaine would fall victim to flats, taking them out of contention. At the finish it was Reichel, the winner for the fourth time this year, second was Duschene, his best finish this year and third was Anderson. Fourth was Dave Bitner Jr. and fifth in his first time out this season was John Babion. Heat winners were Duschene and Reichel.
The 15-lap Niagara Auto Sales Pro 4 Trucks was an interesting race. Third-generation driver Colton Ledingham started on the pole for the first time in his young career with Hilary Haegens beside him. On the start, Haegens would grab the lead coming out of turn two and hang on to it for the first two laps. She would fall victim to the “Flyin’ Frenchman”, Andy Imbeault, on the second lap. Imbeault would then hold off all comers with no yellow flags to bunch up the field. All the action was for third spot with Adam Nicholls, Mike Toovey and Danny Wurster all fighting for the spot all race. At the finish, it was the 36-year veteran, Imbeault, taking home his first win of 2012, Haegens second and Nicholls third. Fourth was Toovey and fifth was Wurster. Heat winners were Haegens and Ledingham.
Starting on the pole for the 15-lap Weekend Motorsports Mini Stocks was Greg Wilson along side of Jocelyne Wiley. Earlier in the day, it was announced that the Wileys would be switching rides and it was Jocelyne in Aaron’s car and Aaron in her car. On the green, Wiley grabbed the early lead with Wilson right behind her. Wiley would lead the first lap, but Wilson scooted by her to lead the next seven laps. For awhile it looked as if Wilson was going to win his first of 2012, but then the “usual suspects” started to make their presence known. Rob Overholt was the first to break free of the pack and then charge after Wilson, taking the lead on lap nine. Wilson would then fall victim to Brandon Iudiciani and then Jason Pietz and finally Kyle Pelrine. These three would then fight it out to see who had anything for Overholt. With again no cautions to bunch up the field, the pack was left hungry. But Overholt was not to be denied and wound up the winner for the second week in a row and in his own car this week. At the finish, it was Overholt the winner, Iudiciani was second and third was Pietz. Fourth was Pelrine and making his 2012 debut in the former Dave Small 67 was Steve Vanderzanden. Heat winners were Overholt, Iudiciani and Chris Laskey.
Starting on the front row for the Frontier Auto Dismantlers Pure Stocks was Jackie Giancola with her old car instead of her new one and Jon Vineski. On the green flag, Vineski would take the early lead and was looking strong until he went high in turn two and got a flat right front tire. He dove into the pits for a new tire and came back out, although two laps down. This opened the door for Leroy Buscumb to take the point and then hold off Sam Iftody and the rest of the pack. Buscumb survived a yellow flag for debris on turn four and then a red flag for a roll-over by Brad Alward on turn one on lap 14. This set up a one lap “dash for cash” between Buscumb and Iftody with Buscumb taking the win. Second was Iftody with third going to Mason Smith. Fourth was Kyle Rothwell and fifth was Brad”the Hammer” Booker. Heat winners were Kyle Tomaski and Vineski.
