Varney ON (May 03, 2015)- Under near perfect conditions grass roots racing action returned to the highbanks just south of Varney. Full Throttle Motor Speedway kicked off their 2105 season in front of great crowd with a full slate of racing action this past Friday night.
The night kicked off with a couple of the feature stars of racing from the Jr Late Model division, Cody Wilds from Exeter driving the #14 along with Travis Placzek from Grand Valley driving the #25 both made their first laps showing the fans what they can expect from this class in the feature.
Fun Stock had a full field of cars on track Friday night picking up where they left off last year when it comes to exciting racing. Feature one had #9 Sandy Eccles from Mount Forest bring home the first checker flag followed by Jr Late Model graduate #34 Alex Hastie from Durham coming in second in his first Fun Stock race. He was followed by #48 John Green, #5 Jeramy Duguay, and #14 Luke Bos from Conn. Feature two saw a great battle up front between #25 Billy Lovell from Mildmay and the #71 of Justin McKague from Teeswater in the end it would be #71 McKague edging out #25 Lovell followed by #14 Luke Bos, #48 John Green, and #32 Ben Klages.
Mini Stock action got underway with a large number of returning drivers along with a few new drivers added to the already top crop of drivers that call the highbanks home. Feature one saw former visitor turned home track driver for 2015 #63 Brandon Crumbie from Cookstown take the first checker of the season followed by #36 last season’s point champion Cory Young from Owen Sound, then it was #34 TJ Edwards rounding out the top three. Feature two again had some of the best door handle to door handle racing you will see anywhere in the province and this time #36 Cory Young would take the checker flag away for #63 Brandon Crumbie. Following them to the line it was #34 TJ Edwards, #7 Paul Boyd of Harriston and rounding out the top 5 #86 Nick Clarke from Mount Forest.
In Winged Modified action we saw our first back to back Victory Lane visitor #33 Tom Houghton from Kitchener. In feature one Houghton was able to out dual #0 Cliff Hodgkinson from Breslau and #36 Dave Hodgkinson from Breslau for the victory.
Feature two would see Houghton dominate the field easily taking the checker over #0 Cliff Hodgkinson, and #10 Christopher Hale from Guelph.
One of the biggest fields of cars opening night was the Street Stocks and with not all the cars out yet this is going to be a class to keep your eye on this season.
In feature one it was the return of #35 Mike Thebeau from Mitchell to the highbanks and he seem to have no trouble figuring the track out again as he picked up his first checker flag of the season. He was followed by #05 Steve Brook from Hillsburgh, #47 Joe Adams from Owen Sound, #7 Paul Huskins from Kitchener and rounding out the top 5 #20 Ryan Edwards-Kiss from Londesboro. Feature two would see newcomer #20 Ryan Edwards-Kiss take is car from outside pole and lead all the way to the checkers for his first Full
Throttle victory of the season. Second would go to #47 Joe Adams, followed by #05 Steve Brook, #35 Mike Thebeau and rounding out the top five #7 Paul Huskins.
The Crazy Trains returned to the highbanks for another season of edge of your seat action but this night would belong to Texas Traincar Massacre out of Mount Forest taking home both feature wins. With six sets out for opening night and more on the way this year will no doubt be another banner year for this class and if you have never seen them before you have to come check them out.
Coming up this weekend at Full Throttle will be our first double header weekend with regular racing Friday night at 7:30 PM featuring Mini Trucks, Fun Stock, Super Truck, Mini Stock, Winged Modified and Street Stock. Then we are back again on Saturday starting at 5:00 PM for our first “Super Saturday Special” with Thunder Car and Outlaw Late Models and featuring the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup 100 lap season opening for this traveling series.
