@Holland Speedway •HOLLAND, New York (August 6, 2016) – Cheektowaga, NY’s Rich Carnes and East Aurora, NY’s “Dynamite” Dave Vona scored the wins in the twin features for the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance Agency NASCAR Pro Chargers on Independent Nursing Care, Coca-Cola Buffalo and Dunkin’ Donuts Hometown Heroes Night at Holland International Speedway on Saturday evening. For Carnes, it was his first win of the season while Vona picked up his second victory of the 2016 season. Dave Wollaber from North Tonawanda, NY earned his fourth win of the season for the NYPA TQ Midgets. Jeff Szafraniec from Buffalo, NY won the Bank of Holland Hornet feature event after “The Madman” Marty Hughes failed post race tech. Carl Vilardo IV from Westfield, NY scored his fourth Advance Auto Parts INEX Legends and third in a row. Darryl Phillips from Angola, NY won the main event for the Rookie 4’s after apparent winner Dale Lombardo failed post race tech.
In the first feature of the night for the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance Agency NASCAR Pro Chargers, Rich Carnes jumped out early into the lead over Ted Welshans, with Jim Mallaber, Nik Welshans and Zach Myers running inside the top five. Josh Hathaway and Dave Vona made contact heading down the front straightaway and Vona spun in turn one to bring out the races first caution on lap 10. Carnes would continue to lead off the restart over Welshans with Mallaber, Myers and Nik Welshans fighting for spots two on back throughout the distance. Josh Hathaway raced his way into the top five in the late going, after using a lap car in a pick. Carnes would be able to score the win. Ted Welshans, Myers, Mallaber and Dave Vona would round out the top five.
In the nightcap, Tim Welshans and Nik Welshans set the pace in the 25 lap feature and it would be Tim Welshans showing the way over brother Nik with Josh Hathaway running in third. Hathaway would take second and would go after Tim Welshans for the lead. Dave Vona would battle with Hathaway for several circuits before taking the runner up spot away just after the halfway mark. Vona would take the lead by using the bottom grove with six laps to go. Hathaway would race by Tim Welshans to take second away with three laps remaining. Vona would go on to score the win. Hathaway, Myers, Welshans and Mallaber would complete the top five.
Scott Gleed and Vinnie Christiano III led the strong field of NYPA TQ Midgets to the green flag for their 20 lap feature event and it was Christiano III showing the way. Father Vinnie Christiano Jr and Dave Wollaber raced their way into second and third and began to chase down the young leader. Dave Wollaber would take the lead away on lap five over Christiano Jr and Christiano III with Erik Musto and Kyle Hutchinson running in the top five. Hutchinson would take third place on lap nine and then moved into second at the cross-flags after passing Christiano Jr on the outside groove. Wollaber would streak away from the rest of the field to earn another victory in the NYPA TQ Midgets. Kyle Hutchinson, Vinnie Christiano Jr, Erik Musto and AJ Hessler would round out the top five in the main event that went green-to-checkered in just four minutes.
Dan Sharf and Adam Killingbeck brought the Bank of Holland Hornets to the green flag and it was third place starter Marty Hughes taking the lead early. Bob Palmer used a sixth place starting position to take over second early and would begin to catch Hughes. Jeff Szafraniec needed ten laps to enter the top five for the first time after getting around pole sitter Dan Sharf. Szafraniec moved into third with Jason Adams passing Palmer to take over second with 12 laps remaining. Szafraniec took second away from Adams with 4 to go and would go after race leader Hughes. Hughes would go to what would appear to be his first win of the season, however failed post race tech, giving the win to Jeff Szafraniec.
Terry Lindstrom and Josh Marchese led the Advance Auto Parts INEX Legends to the green flag for their 20 lap feature event and it was Marchese jumping into the lead. Carl Vilardo IV took the lead on lap two as Brandon DeBrakeleer moved into third. DeBrakeleer would take second away on lap three from early race leader Marchese and would begin to go after Vilardo. Bryce Norton worked his way through the field to move into third place just before the halfway mark. Vilardo would pull away from DeBrakeleer, Norton Marchese and Salatino to score the win, his third in a row and fourth on the season.
Brian Erler and Scott Chaplin set the pace in the Rookie 4’s feature and it was Chaplin showing the way with Dale Lombardo running in second. Lombardo would take the lead away on lap four and drove away from the field to what would have been his fourth win of the season, but failed post race tech. Second place finisher Chaplin also failed post race tech, giving the win to Darryl Phillips. Tyler Pastorious, and Brian Erler would complete the top three following post race tech.
NEWS AND NOTES: It was another edition of the Dunkin’ Donuts Hometown Heroes night for the drivers that live in Angola, Gowanda, Hamburg, Irving and Lackawanna. The Speedway welcomed Independent Nursing Care LLC and their friends to the Kwik Fill Turn 4 Terrace this evening.
The race for the 2016 Holland track titles will continue to heat up on Saturday August 13th as the Bank of Holland Hornets will be featured in a 50 lap event “under the lights”. A full NASCAR Whelen All-American Series program featuring twin features for the Chargers plus NYPA TQ Midgets, INEX Legends, M&M U Pull-It Figure 8’s and Rookie 4’s will round out the racing card. Don’t miss the Dale Earnhardt Jr Nationwide Insurance #88 showcar and simulator presented by Getzoni Nationwide Insurance. It will also be ECMC Employee Appreciation Night plus Dunkin’ Donuts Hometown Heroes Night for the drivers from Cheektowaga, Elma, South Buffalo and West Seneca. Pit gates will open at 4:15pm with grandstand gates opening at 5:45pm and qualifying racing action starts at 6:00pm. NASCAR feature racing will be underway promptly at 7:05pm.
