September 22, 2013- Fraserville, Ontario, -Coming off his second win of the season at Barrie Speedway, Jason Hathaway was sitting third in the 2013 NASCAR Canadian Tire points battle heading into the last race of the season at Kawartha Speedway.
The #3 Snap-on Tools/Rockstar Energy Drink Dodge showed its winning capabilities this season and the Team was well prepared and was in contention for another podium, finish in the Pinty’s 250 until a lapped car took him out during the race.
Saturday’s trackside activities were postponed due to rain and rescheduled for Sunday. Sunday morning’s practice went well for the Team and Hathaway topped the session, ending the one-hour practice in second spot on the speed charts.
Qualifying was a little tougher with colder temperatures and the tight lap times. Hathaway posted an 11th place qualifying effort, but was not too phased by his starting spot.
“We have a strong car and we like running here. The point’s battle is pretty exciting and we are happy to be a part of it!”
The Pinty’s 250 got underway just shortly after 3:00 pm and once again, Hathaway’s charge to the front showed early.
By lap 50, Hathaway was running comfortably in the sixth spot. On lap 78 Crew Chief Craig Masters called his driver down pit road for fuel and a tire pressure adjustment. Hathaway got back out onto the track in fourth and after pit stops cycled through, Hathaway restarted in second.
A great battle ensued between Hathaway and his good friend Jr Fitzpatrick; earning the top spot on lap 94. He convincingly held the lead, putting a quarter track between him and the rest of the field until lap 149 when the caution flew and Hathaway came in for a four tire stop, coming out 13th.
With four brand new tires, Hathaway put on a driving clinic and worked his way back up to the second spot in the running order, leaving behind his fellow competitors in the Championship hunt.
Hathaway’s successful run was interrupted on lap 217, when an ill-thinking and ill-handling lapped car spun out the second place Hathaway in his #3 Snap-on Tools/Rockstar Energy Drink Dodge. Hathaway got his car pointed in the right direction, but unfortunately went down a lap to the leader.
Hathaway earned the free pass on Lap 232, but there simply were not enough laps to get back what he lost when he was spun out; recording an 11th place finish.
“We had a car that could have finshed on the podium here today, but being spun by a lapped car really took that out of our grasp. We have definitely spiced up the points battle in 2013 and we made some huge in roads in the process. We showed that we are serious contenders in this series. This has been a pretty successful season for our Team and our sponsors and we are happy to finish up third in the Championship battle.”
The Pinty’s 250 will premier on Sunday October 6th at 5:30 pm EST on TSN2 and on RDS at 9 pm EST on Friday October 18th with a special season ending 90 minute program.
