BOWMANVILLE, ON – May 10, 2017) Hockey Hall of Fame goalie and former Toronto Maple Leaf star Johnny Bower has been announced as the Grand Marshall for the Castrol presents Victoria Day SpeedFest Weekend May 19-21, at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. The event marks the unofficial start to summer and will feature exciting racing from five different series.

Bower, nicknamed the China Wall because of his unrelenting approach to protecting the net, was recently named as one of the top 100 players of all time by the National Hockey League. In his 12 years as the goalie with the Maple Leafs, Bower won four Stanley Cup championships, and two Vezina Trophies. Bower retired in 1969 and was inducted into Hockey’s Hall of Fame in 1976.

“We are honoured to welcome Johnny Bower as the Grand Marshall for the weekend,” said Myles Brandt, President and General Manager, Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. “Mr. Bower was not only a tremendous hockey player when he played, but he’s also a great Canadian. Celebrating great moments as part of the Canada 150 celebrations, we thought it would be fun this year at CTMP to tie in the 50-year anniversary (1967) of Formula 1 racing at our track and also the year the Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup with Mr. Bower in net.”

The Castrol Victoria Day SpeedFest Weekend will once again kick-off Canadian Tire Motorsport Park’s racing season with the ground pounding roar of the stock cars of the NASCAR Pinty’s Series competing in the Can-Am 200 as well as all classes of the Pirelli World Challenge Championship including the series’ high-octane GT super cars. The three-day event also features exciting races in the Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama, the Canadian Touring Car Championship presented by Pirelli, and the Nissan Micra Cup Series.

Bower is scheduled to be at CTMP Sunday May 21st to give the “Drivers Start Your Engine” command for the Can-Am 200. Prior to the race, he will be in attendance for a special fan meet and greet event.

Along with the great on-track action there’s plenty for fans to see and do in the CTMP Marketplace and Canadian Tire Action Zone. There’s a play area, face painting, hockey shootout zone, Toronto Maple Leafs locker room trailer, casting pond and live music. You will also find the Pinty’s Trackside Grill, the official CTMP merchandise trailer and driver autograph sessions along with interactive activities including the Chevy Race Face and Hydro One’s Electricity Discovery Centre, all conveniently located within the Marketplace. And don’t miss the spectacular fireworks display on Saturday evening as part of CTMP’s Victoria Day weekend celebrations!
