MILTON, ON- Fresh off of a 6th place finish in Round 3 of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series at Sunset Speedway on June 20th, Rookie of the Year contender Gary Klutt will turn his attention to the Ecko Unlimited 100 at Circuit ICAR for Round 4 of the cross-country series on July 5th.
“I’m very happy with how well our oval program has performed this season,” smiles Klutt in reference to his back-to-back top-7 finishes at Autodrome Chaudiere and Sunset Speedway.
“When we committed to the full schedule, we knew it wassomething we needed to work on,” continues the likeable freshman. “So far, I think we’ve shown we’re ready to compete with the best in this country – no matter what speedway we’re on. It’s all about being a well-rounded competitor, with a complete race team, and I feel as though we have that this season.”
His spirited performance in the Leland 300 at Sunset marked just his third career appearance on an oval, and saw Klutt claim his second pole award of 2015 en route to running amongst the front pack for the entirety of the 300-lap event.
“Sunset was a huge confidence booster,” says Klutt. “We were running some fantastic lap times in practice, but it was still surreal to qualify on the pole when you consider how many elite-level short track veterans were in the field. It reminded us that all of our hard work has certainly been paying off”
Klutt will now prepare himself to return to Circuit ICAR, marking his first road course start since a head-turning breakout victory in Round 1 of the series at the famed Canadian Tire Motorosport Park in May.
“I’m excited to get back to ICAR,” explains Klutt. “It’s as technical a race track as we go to all season, so finding the right setup package is going to be key. We missed the setup just a touch last season, and still battled our way to an 8th place finish”
“This team gives me such incredible equipment week in and week out, if I can hit my marks and stay out of the rough stuff, there’s no reason we can’t contend for the top step of the podium this weekend.”
Klutt will enter the event sitting second in NASCAR Canadian Tire Series championship points standings, just 4 markers back of leader Jason Hathaway.
“It’s still very early to start worrying about where we are in the points, but we’re very proud of where we are right now and what we’ve already accomplished this season,” says Klutt.
“I think Circuit ICAR will provide us with an excellent opportunity to once again race with some of the best drivers in the country, and if the end results is us improving our position in the points standings, I’m sure out entire team will be elated.”
