Montreal, September 9, 2013 – NASCAR Canadian Tire Series rookie Alex Guenette drove like a veteran at his first visit to this tight tri-oval, finishing a strong fifth after starting 11th, and spending most of the race in the Top-5 group.
The Hudco Electric Supply 300, run on the small, third-mile oval, was scheduled for Saturday evening, but intermittent showers caused the organizers to postpone qualifying and the race to Sunday. The rain had washed the race surface clean of rubber deposits which did not help Alex on Sunday.
“We had been third quickest time in Saturday practice, on a set-up that made the most of the rubber deposits.”
For qualifying and the race, the team had to guess at new settings, and as Alex says, “They guessed right. Experience does come in handy after all. We had been told that the track was difficult to learn, but we were comfortable right from the start of practice on Saturday and again on Sunday. The clean track had little traction when I qualified early in the session, so I did not push too hard on cold tires. But I was sure that we would be OK in the long race as rubber would build up again and my car would get quicker as the race wore on.”
Starting 11th on the No 39 Motos Illimitées/DLGL/Polaris Dodge, prepared by Jacombs Racing, Alex proceeded to fight his way to the leading group over the first third of the race. Alex then stuck to this Top 5 group for the rest of the race, and was sixth for the last Green-White-Checkered restart. He then fought off challenges from behind and even passed another car, securing his second fifth–place of his Rookie season.
According to Alex, “The handling of the car was excellent throughout the race, as good as the top three runners. The team executed great pit stops and allowed me to gain a few position over the course of the 300 laps. We are all very happy with the result we achieved.”
This great performance allowed Alex to build on his lead in the 2013 Rookie Of The Year title race, with only one race left in the 2013 season.
The final race will take place on September 21, at Kawartha Speedway, near Peterborough, ON.
The « Hudco Electric Supply 300 » will be shown on TSN on September 14 at 2pm and on RDS on October 4 at 8pm.
