September 2, 2014- The Northeast DIRTcar Sportsman division is about as tough as it gets with increasing car counts from year to year and an increased level of competition. Dylan Evoy and the Evoy Racing team have been a part of the division for several years now and they know all to well just how tough the sport can be.
Winning races is no easy task, and to win more than one on any given weekend is virtually unheard of anymore. Evoy did accomplish just that back at the end of May, winning races at both Mohawk Raceway and Brockville Speedway, and has done similar numerous times over the years.
This past weekend was the final night of the regular season at Mohawk Raceway and Brockville Speedway. Evoy’s chances at the track title at both tracks had all but slipped away, but he was determined more than ever to add to his season win totals and he did have the MIR Frenchie’s Sportsman title on the line on Friday night.
At Mohawk Raceway on Friday night, Evoy drove to victory in his qualifying heat race, placing him in the redraw for a top 12 starting spot for the night’s 35 lap Frenchie’s Sportsman Series finale. He drew position number seven, and quickly charged forward and was up to third when the first caution of the race came out on lap five. Immediately after the race resumed, Evoy took control of the race and held off a couple late race challenges to pick up the win and remains as the only winner of the Frenchie’s Sportsman Series dating back to its inception in 2011.
The attention of the Evoy Racing team quickly turned to Brockville Speedway. After a frustrating week the previous week that knocked them from championship contention, Dylan’s only plan for this night was to go out and win. Dylan started from the 10th position and made steady progress in the opening laps, advancing to the runnerup position as the caution came out on lap seven. Once the race resumed, Evoy was quick to capture the lead and went on to score his second win of the weekend.
“It has been a great weekend so far”, says Evoy. “I really have to thank my family and all of our sponsors and the crew for everything they do both at the track and at the race shop. We are going to head to Cornwall tomorrow night and see if we can pick up another one”.
Dylan made his first appearance of the season on Monday afternoon at Cornwall Speedway after the original Sunday date was postponed due to rain. The extreme slick track conditions from the hot afternoon sun played right into Evoy’s favor as he took the lead on lap 18 and cruised to victory for the third night in a row.
“This is pretty special for us”, says Evoy. “We have been fortunate enough in our career to win back-to-back on a few occasions, but to win on three consecutive nights in one weekend and win our second Mr. DIRTcar Track Points Championship is pretty remarkable. I really have to thank my family, sponsors, crew and fans for their support”.
The Mr. DIRTcar Track Points Championship is a championship that tallies each competitors top 16 finishes throughout the regular season. Competitors from Ontario, Quebec and New York State compete at various tracks within the DIRTcar sanctioning body. Evoy’s 11 DIRTcar wins sealed the championship in the final points weekend. Dylan also won this championship in 2012.
The next event on the schedule for the Evoy Racing team will take place back at Mohawk Raceway on Saturday, September 13th as the DIRTcar Sportsman Series will be on hand. They Evoy team will finish out the 2014 season back at Brockville Speedway on Saturday, October 18th.
