@targanl •CLARENVILLE (September 12, 2016) – Targa Newfoundland competitors had an early rise today as they geared up for their first official day of the timed-rally. It began with stages in Colliers and Marysvale then moved onto Makinsons, followed by the Burin peninsula, with stages in Black River and Garden Cove.

The day had a late start in Colliers due to windy conditions, however got back on track for the following stage. On stage four, coming out of Turks Gut, the 1995 BMW M3 of John Robinsons and Geoffrey Millan, had some mechanical issues causing them to pull out for the day and the vehicle was brought to Clarenville for inspection. The source of the problem has been located and the team and crew are hoping to have it fixed in time for tomorrow’s competition. At the second last stage of the day, one vehicle sled off track resulting in damage to the car’s right axle. The team was medically checked out for precautionary measures and were given a clean bill of health. The team is expected to rejoin the competition.

Before the stage in Makinsons, competitors filed in to the United Church Hall in Brigus for a delicious Cod-au-Gratin lunch provided by members of the town. Competitors look forward to revisiting the historic site on their final day of competition.

A bottleneck of competitors is leading after today’s stages. In Classic division, Iain Dobson, Jack Rogers, Richard Atkinson, and Bert Howerton. In Modern division, John Hume Jr. and Peter Guagenti. In Open division, Jean Luc Bergeron, Andrew Comrie-Picard, and Mike Davenport. In Grand Touring, the majority of the competitors are still tied with zero penalties.

Tomorrow’s action is based on the Burin peninsula. The day begins in Boat Harbour and continues in to Harbour Mille, Grand Le Pierre and ending off in Terrenceville. Each evening the public is invited to the Clarenville Eastlink Events Centre from 730-9 for Car Shows featuring all the vehicles in this year’s competition. Proceeds from these events go to the Clarenville chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).

Owned and operated by Newfoundland International Motorsports Limited, Targa Newfoundland is one of three internationally recognized Targa motorsports events in the world. The 2016 competition will start in St. John’s on September 12th and conclude back in the capital on September 16th. The rally will cover more than 1,600 kilometers of challenging roads in the central and eastern portions of Newfoundland. It includes over 440 kilometers of closed-road, flat-out Targa stages.
