INNISFIL, ON- Reigning Sunset Speedway St. Onge Recreation Super Stock champion ‘The Prodigy’ Cayden Lapcevich dominated his first race of the 2015 campaign – leading all 30-laps en route to winning May 2nd’s season opener at the Innisfil facility.
The victory capped off a come-from-behind effort for Lapcevich, who rebounded after a disappointing run in his heat race qualifier that threatened to derail his evening.
“This win means even more after the way we started tonight,” laughed ‘The Prodigy’ in victory lane. “We had a terrible heat race to start the night off and really had to work to rebound”
“Fortunately, we had a great car in the B Main and were able to grind out a second place finish which put us in the redraw,” continued Lapcevich. “We ended up drawing P1 which was essentially like hitting the restart button on our whole night”
Lapcevich wasted little time after starting from the pole position, taking the lead on lap-1 before turning back several challenges from past champions Randy Rusnell and Lane Zardo throughout the hotly contested race.
“We had to work for this one that’s for sure,” confirmed Lapcevich. “This division is so stacked. This was the kind of racing that we knew we were in for this year. I knew Randy and Lane would be back there, so I just kept listening to Dad on the radio. He coached me through it and let me know when we were starting to pull away. I let him talk me through it and just concentrated on hitting my marks and running my race”
The teenager explained post-race that, while his team won’t be able to compete fulltime at Sunset due to other obligations, the goal will still be to win as many features possible throughout the year.
“Dad and I made the decision not to come back and defend our title so that we could do some NASCAR Canadian Tire Series racing this summer. We’re still going to be out in the Super Stock as much as we can, though”
“The fact that we’re not points racing just means we’re going to go for it every single night that we’re here. We’re not going to be focused on where we are in the standings, we’re just going to focus on getting to victory lane as many times as possible.”
Cayden Lapcevich’s 2015 season is made possible thanks to the support of Tim Hortons,Castrol, Cathcart Trucking, Springers Meats, EPIC Racewear and Troy Cove Marine.
