GSR and Velocity Race Cars are pleased to announce that 2016 NASCAR Pinty’s Series champion Cayden Lapcevich will join the organizations for the upcoming NASCAR Canada Series event at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on September 6.
Lapcevich brings championship-winning experience and an impressive racing résumé to a GSR and Velocity program being built with a clear objective: to provide drivers and partners with the equipment, preparation, technical support and race-weekend execution required to compete at a championship level in NASCAR Canada.
Lapcevich captured both the NASCAR Pinty’s Series championship and Rookie of the Year honours in 2016. His accomplishments also include back-to-back Sunset Speedway Super Stock championships in 2014 and 2015, two Glass City 200 victories and the pole for the prestigious Winchester 400 in 2020.
Beyond his accomplishments behind-the-wheel, Lapcevich is currently a Car Chief with Halmar Friesen Racing in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, giving him valuable experience working within one of NASCAR’s top national touring series and providing another level of technical knowledge to the GSR and Velocity Race Cars program.
His addition to the CTMP effort provides GSR and Velocity with another proven benchmark as the organizations continue developing and showcasing the capabilities of the program.
“This is exactly the type of driver we want involved in what we’re building,” said Glenn Styres of GSR. “Cayden is a NASCAR champion and he knows what it takes to win. We’ve invested heavily in the cars, equipment and resources, and putting a driver with Cayden’s experience in one of our cars gives us an opportunity to continue developing the program and show what it is capable of.”
GSR brings its investment in competitive NASCAR equipment and infrastructure, while Velocity Race Cars provides preparation, setup, data acquisition analysis, and at-track performance support.
“Cayden gives us exactly the kind of feedback and experience we need,” said Pete Vanderwyst, President of Velocity Race Cars. “When you put a NASCAR champion in the car, you have a proven benchmark. Our job is to give him a properly prepared race car, use his feedback and the data we collect, and continue improving the overall package.”
The CTMP effort is part of a larger vision for GSR and Velocity Race Cars.
Together, the organizations are developing a complete NASCAR Canada program for drivers and partners looking for opportunities ranging from individual races and partial schedules to full-season championship campaigns.
The objective is to provide the complete package — competitive equipment, professional preparation, setup and technical support, data acquisition and analysis, and race weekend execution — without requiring a driver or partner to build that infrastructure independently.
With a NASCAR champion behind-the-wheel at CTMP, GSR and Velocity Race Cars will have another opportunity to demonstrate exactly what that program can deliver.
As the program continues to develop, there are opportunities for further collaboration between GSR, Velocity Race Cars and Lapcevich that could extend beyond the CTMP event.
Additional details regarding the car, partners and race-weekend program will be announced leading into the CTMP event.
