GRIMSBY, ON- Just two events removed from the crowning of the 2014 Sunset Speedway Super Stock champion, third-year competitor Cayden Lapcevich sits 2nd in the standings – only 7 points back from the lead.
With a trio of feature wins to his credit, the third-generation driver has enjoyed a breakout season in 2014, and has become a threat to win on any given night.
“I can’t even explain how proud I am of our team”, says Lapcevich, “we’ve come so far in the three years we’ve been racing at Sunset. It’s a night and day difference from when we started to now”
“We’re at the point now where we’re improving with every single race. Every time I’m on the track, I’m trying to find little ways to get better. Whether it’s learning from the drivers I race against, or picking something up in the pit area. Every time we put this car in the trailer, I’m able to say that I know a little bit more than I did when we unloaded it”
While it would be understandable for ‘The Prodigy’ to feel the pressure of a late-season push for the championship, the 14-year old is quick to point out how much he’s enjoying the experience.
“I don’t feel any pressure at all”, smiles the personable high-school student. “We’ve worked hard all year for this. My team’s given me an awesome car, and we’ve been fortunate enough to work our way into this position. There’s two nights left, whatever happens, happens”
“I’m having the time of my life right now”, adds Lapcevich.
“The first two years in this division, we dedicated ourselves to learning the track and the equipment”, Lapcevich continues. “This is the first season that we had a plan to run for the championship. So far, it’s worked out incredibly. Hopefully we can stay full steam ahead and find a way to win this thing”
Cayden will return to action on Saturday, August 30th at Sunset Speedway. Details, including gate times and ticket prices can be found at www.SunsetSpeedway.ca.
