MISSISSAUGA, ON – This past weekend, Canadian Renault Sport Formula One Test Driver and INFINITI Canada ambassador Nicholas Latifi broke his FIA Formula 2 Championship luck at the celebrated ‘Home of British Motorsport’.
He dominated the Sprint Race at Silverstone to register his breakthrough victory in the fiercely disputed Formula 1 feeder series, making him the first Canadian to win in F2 history.
Nicholas regards the legendary circuit as his favourite on the F2 calendar, and he lapped at the sharp end from the outset, placing P4 in free practice and grabbing P6 on the grid for Saturday’s longer Feature Race. After a few setbacks during the race, Nicholas fought back strongly and was determined not to squander his front row opportunity. He coolly held his nerve and edged clear to flash across the finish line 1.7sec to the good – in so doing confidently securing his first F2 success and strengthening his fourth position in the drivers’ championship standings.
“I’m really thrilled to get the win – I haven’t won in single seaters for too long, so this gives me a massive boost going forward, said Latifi. “I’ve worked really hard to take a big step forward in my race pace since last year, and right from the first round of 2017, we showed we can challenge at the front. Since Baku, we’ve been consistently on the podium at least once every weekend. The goal is to keep fighting for more podiums and wins over the second half of the season – and there’s no reason why we can’t do that.”
Toronto, Ontario native Nicholas Latifi is well-known in the global motorsport community, having competed successfully in karts, Formula 3, Formula Renault 3.5 and this season in the FIA Formula 2 Championship with the team DAMS. Nicholas’ budding professional racing career spans the globe, as he has competed with distinction in Canada, Italy, Great Britain, New Zealand, USA and Europe. His most recent milestone is acting as a test driver for Renault Sport Formula One Team and INFINITI Canada ambassador.
“On behalf of INFINITI Canada and its employees, I want to congratulate Nicholas Latifi on becoming the first Canadian to win in F2 history,” said Stephen Lester, managing director, INFINITI Canada. “We are thrilled to have Nicholas as an INFINITI Canada ambassador, and look forward to seeing his career develop on the grid as he continues to compete as a F2 driver and test driver for Renault Sport Formula One Team.”
