AUSTIN, TX (May 05, 2021)- JDX Racing team quotes from the Porsche Carrera Cup NA races at COTA. PARKER THOMPSON: It was an incredible race weekend at COTA for Porsche Carrera Cup North America! I’m excited to come through with a win for the team at JDX Racing with support from Byers Porsche and Renier Construction. We’ve put in some great work since the season opener at Sebring and there is nothing better than seeing that work get rewarded with a win. This is just the beginning!
SEAN McALISTER: It was an eventful week at COTA, we had two days of clear and sunny testing on Monday and Tuesday of race week but the weather did a 180 degree swing for the race weekend. We had two practice sessions that were similar conditions of wet-to-dry and then our only session on Saturday, which was qualifying, got cancelled due to extremely heavy rainfall.
Our first race Sunday morning was in very wet-to-dry conditions and was gridded by championship points so I started 6th. I had a ton of wheelspin on the start and lost a few positions going into Turn 1 and ended up falling back further throughout the race because I wasn’t driving very well in the wet with slick tires on the car.
A few laps later, I spun and touched the wall and pierced a radiator so I had to retire the car. The second race on Sunday was very hot and humid. I started Race 2 in 22nd position because the grid was set up by lap time in Race 1, which was a bummer but it made for a very fun race with lots of passing.
I had great pace, running faster laps than the P5 to P10 cars and I ended up in P11 at the checkered flag. All in all, it was a fun week in Texas, and I can’t thank the JDX crew for getting the car all fixed up for the second race. Can’t wait for Watkins Glen in New York!
JEREMY DALE, MANAGING PARTNER/JDX RACING: What a week it has been at COTA! We arrived a week ago and did some testing where we made great progress with the performance of our cars. Both Parker and Sean did a great job at the test and that has paid dividends.
With the cancellation of qualifying due to heavy rain, it was all about racing on Sunday. Race 1 was early on Sunday and the track was wet due to overnight rains, but almost every driver stated on dry weather tires, which is very tricky. Both drivers got a solid start, but unfortunately Sean got caught up early in some on-track action and had a very small spin that resulted in a punctured radiator – and his race was done before it really got started.
Parker right away moved from fifth to third and by lap three he was in second but with a nearly six second gap to the leader. But no matter, he started laying down some crazy fast laps and within four laps was fighting for the lead. The pass for the lead came on the last lap…at the last turn. It doesn’t get better than that! It feels great to win a Carrera Cup race in just our third start.
Race 2 on Sunday afternoon was much more straightforward. Sean had to start down the field and fought his way through about 10 cars to finish a strong 11th. Parker got shuffled back a bit at the start and fought his way to a solid 4th place finish. We have come out of the weekend with our first win and improved our standing in the championship. I would call that a great weekend!
