AVONDALE, AZ – Canada’s DJ Kennington wraps up his 2017 race season at a track where he has extensive experience competing in each of NASCAR’s top racing divisions.
This weekend, the St. Thomas, ON racer – who is a veteran on Canada’s NASCAR Pinty’s Series – is making his 20th appearance at Phoenix International Raceway. For the second year in a row, Kennington will compete in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series at the Arizona facility.
Kennington will be behind the wheel of the Northern Provincial Pipelines Ltd./Clark Construction #15 Chevrolet.
“Try to run all the laps and finish the race with the car in one piece,” said Kennington, when asked about his goals. “Trying to finish higher than where I finished here last year.”
Kennington finished 35th in his Phoenix debut in the NASCAR Monster Energy Series.
Last November’s debut laid the groundwork for his appearance at the 2017 Daytona 500 back in February. Kennington was credited with a 36th place finish at Daytona after getting caught up in a multi-car crash late in the race.
Although his time has been limited in the Monster Energy NASCAR Series, the learning curve is getting a little bit straighter.
“Cars are a lot different than what I’m used to. However, the more you drive these cars the better off you’ll be.”
Kennington, a two-time Pinty’s NASCAR Series Champion in Canada, finished 5th in points in 2017.
“I’m an extremely lucky guy to be able to do what I do and race against the best drivers in the world.”
DJ will be on the track Friday morning for practice. Friday afternoon is qualifying, when Kennington takes on the best drivers in the world in the hopes of making the 40 car starting line-up for Sunday’s race.
