Bowmanville, ON- Dwight Brown earned a perfect score on May 25, piloting his #2 Modified to a pair of heat race victories, and following up that performance with the win in the 25 lap feature contest to move into the early season points lead in the Ontario Modified Racing Series Powered by Techtonix Construction.
Brown, the defending series champion moved into the race lead on Lap 3, and was able to open a small gap over his pursuers. Behind him, veteran Rick Warnes (#90) and series newcomers Chad Strawn (#77) and Nick Lees (#09) became embroiled in a three-way scrap for the runner-up position. The spot was eventually secured by Strawn on the penultimate lap, with Warnes crossing the stripe affixed to Strawn’s rear nerf bar, Lees trailing slightly behind, a further four car lengths in arrears. Bill Pickford (#61) edged Rob Warnes (#95) for a Top 5 result.
Although Brown’s perennial rival Darren Kearnan was sidelined due to a blown engine suffered by the #46 in pre-race practice, the Beeton, ON driver admitted that he had not been allowed to relax over the course of the ‘Clean & Green’ feature run.
“Those guys (Strawn/ Warnes) are really competitive,” stated Brown. “I was running one hard lap after another, and I wasn’t able to pull away. It’s a shame I didn’t get to race with Darren and a couple of the other guys who didn’t make the feature, that would have been a good show!”
Strawn explained that the evening’s unseasonably cold temperatures added another element into the racing equation.
“I think the cold messed up everyone’s setup tonight. We set our car up to be a little tight, but as the night went on, that tight condition got worse and worse,” said Strawn.
The OMRA will return to the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park Speedway on June 15 for Round Three (of Eight). Full details and results can be found on the website, www.ontariomodifiedsracing.com.
