Chris Herbison knows how to write a script for dramatic last laps. Last year, on the final lap of the final race, a pass netted him a track championship. Saturday night, the Love Bug was at it again, with a final turn, final lap pass for the opening night victory in the Sportsman division at Brockville Ontario Speedway.
The Brockville driver carefully and steadily made his way to second place in the 22 car field as newcomer Corey Wheeler turned heads leading the first 24 circuits. Herbison started to apply the heat in the final five circuits and made his move on the final lap pulling alongside down the back straightaway. The two were still dead even coming off the final turn, but it was Herbison four thousandths of a second in front at the finish line. Wheeler settled for second in front of Ryan Poole, Ghislain Lacombe and Steve Barber.
In the 30 lap Modified main event, Danny O Brien waged a race long battle with Dale Planck. The multi time track champion pulled away in the closing laps for a comfortable win. Bobby Herrington stuck with the lead duo for the final half a race for a solid third followed by Matt Billings and Pat O Brien.
Joe McNichols dominated in the 16 lap Rookie main event scorching the field once he garnered the top spot. Josh Kirkland was a distant second with Ron Day working his way through the field for a third place showing. Chris Bakker and Brandon Henderson rounded out the fast five. Paul Billings in his Gremlin took the Vintage opener over Denzil Billings Jr. Brian Comeau, Steve Lackie and Peter Stapper on Ken Seymour Memorial BOB FM night at the track. Benoit Dubois held off some challenges from Derek Cryderman for Street Stock honours. Alain Proulix was third followed by Kevin Fetterly Jr, and Yan Labelle.
Brockville Ontario Speedway returns to action next Saturday night, May 19th with a full race program plus a special 40 lap event for the Sportsman division. The engines will be turned loose at 7 pm.
