BROCKVILLE, ON – It was only a blink of an eye. However, it was lots for Chris Herbison and not quite enough for Dana Aikins as the two went toe to toe on Saturday night in the 25-lap Sportsman feature at Brockville Ontario Speedway. The defending track champion and current points leader from Brockville nipped Aikins who had led almost every lap by .005 of a second at the finish line.
Aikins got out to an early lead and at times was able to pull away from Herbison, who quickly worked his way into contention after starting deep in the field. However, Herbison would nip away finally taking the lead briefly on lap 24. Aikins took it back in turn 2, Herbison led again in turn 3 on the final circuit before Aikins mounted a final charge on the outside coming off turn 4 just coming up short. Dylan Evoy finished third in front of John Mills and Sheldon Hoogwerf.
Danny O’Brien has been either at the front of the pack or near the back all season. The 10-time BOS track champ from Kingston was at the front and on the gas this night in scoring his 3rd Modified feature win of 2012. O Brien led by a half lap at one point before a restart with four to go bunched up the field. O Brien dashed away again from Dale Planck for the victory with Bobby Herrington, Kyle Dingwall and Pat O’Brien rounding out the top five.
Defending Street Stock champ Kevin Fetterly Jr of Messena, NY, was back in the winner’s circle for the first time since June as he went wire to wire in the 15 lapper. Nick Gauvreau settled for second ahead of Derek Cryderman, Danny Mocibob and Travis Andrews. The Rookie feature came down to a car length at the checkered with Brockville’s Josh Kirkland, leading all 15 circuits and holding off a late challenge from Dwight Feltham. John Stanley, Chris Bakker and Joe McNicholls were third through fifth respectively.
Brockville Ontario Speedway returns to action next Saturday, August 18, with a full race program plus the vintage cars. The green flag drops at 7 p.m.
