@BrightonSpdwy • Brighton, ON (June 13, 2015)- Racing was nothing short of spectacular Saturday night at Brighton Speedway as another driver scored a career-first victory. A field of 56 cars jammed the pit area along with 11 mini vans for the Gord’s Water Vantastics first race of the season. Fans were also able to meet their favourite drivers on track as part of Bay Marine and Investors Group Fan Appreciation night.

Turner Earns First Career Pro Late Model Victory

Caley Weese (No.77 Dibbits Excavating) and Andy Mayhew (No.1 A&A Haulage) brought the 18-car RUSH Pro Late Model field to the green flag. A pair of early race cautions kept the field tight, which led to a scary incident on lap five.

Phil Potts (No.29 Vanderlaan Building Products) flipped wildly down the frontstretch, rolling at least three times before coming to rest on top of the turn one wall. Several drivers spun to avoid hitting Potts, resulting in Kyle Sopaz (No.12 Free Flow Petroleum) and Steve Baldwin (No.5 Smokin’ Speedway) wedged together at the bottom of the track. No drivers were injured and Potts even went so far as to call the roller coaster ride “fun” after walking away under his own power.

Adam Turner (No.92 Village Variety and Gas Bar) led the field back to green after passing Weese on lap three. To Turner’s benefit, the race ran caution-free for the final 27 laps. He checked out in front of the field, opening a 10-car length lead over Weese.

Turner had some trouble negotiating lapped traffic with under 10 laps to go, but was never challenged for the lead. Corey Earl (No.11 Hotch’s Auto Parts) made a late pass to get by Weese for the runner-up spot. The win was Turner’s first career in a Pro Late Model. Greg Belyea (No.25 Excel Tower Service), Austin King (No.89 Durmach Excellence in Tooling) and Dave McDonald (No.97 McDonald Homes) won the qualifying heats.

Ferguson Foils Foes For First Win

It took four laps and three cautions for the field of OilGARD Canadian Modified drivers to find their footing. Polesitter Warren Mowat (No.46 Cormier’s Auto Recycling) maintained the lead but had his hands full with Josh Hennessy (No.88 A&A Haulage) and Doug O’Blenis (No.32 John’s Car Care).

Dan Ferguson (No.11 Kilmarnock Enterprise) burst in to the mix for the runner-up spot and created a hole on the bottom of the track to pass both O’Blenis and Hennessy in one-shot on lap eight.

Two laps later, Ferguson had tracked down Mowat for the race lead. Ferguson took to the top lane on a very tacky track and got the preferred lane exiting turn two to take the lead. O’Blenis took over second shortly after, but Ferguson grew his lead to 10-car lengths by the half-way mark and then to a full straightaway with five laps to go.

Without a caution to tighten the field, Ferguson cruised to his first victory since winning the 2014 edition of the Danny Reid Memorial. O’Blenis finished second ahead of Andrew Hennessy (No.87 Custom Automotive), who rallied from a flat right front on the opening lap to score a third-place finish.

Ramsay Scores Four

The opening corners of the Brighton Automotive Pro Stock main event was chaotic as Angie Kirby (No.23 Mr. Runningboard) spun in turn two and collected a couple of other drivers. Points leader Justin Ramsay (No.03 Empey Tire) swerve to the top and landed in the creek.

Ramsay was pulled from the weeds to restart at the tail but wasted little time moving back to the front. Leslie Mowat (No.2 Cormier’s Auto Recycling) was the early leader with Brandon Murrell (No.19 Hannah Motors) in tow.

On lap four, Ramsay passed Murrell in turn two for second and tracked down Mowat on the backstretch. He made the pass for the lead in turn four on the same lap. Ramsay’s No.03 was on rails from that point forward growing a lead to a half lap.

The hard work was erased on lap 22 when Rich Sanders (No.29 Frank’s Auto Repair) lost a wheel on the backstretch. That gave Doug Anderson (No.72 Hunt’s Landscaping) a shot at the lead, but Ramsay was superior and led the final three laps for his fourth victory of the season. Mowat and Murrell won the qualifying heats.

French Edges Reid For Fourth Victory

Riley Greer (No.47 Greer Excavating) and Emily Weedman (No.87 Dent Masters) led the Bill’s Johns Comp 4 field to the green flag for the 15-lap main event. Weedman took the early lead, but Tyler French (No.0 Empey Tire) had other plans and capitalized on turn two bobble to take the lead on lap three.

Following the only caution of the race on lap seven, a three-car battle for the lead emerged between French, Austin Reid (No.85 Young Drivers) and Shelby Mills (No.78 ABC Taxi). Reid moved to the outside of French and momentarily took the lead on lap 10 with an excellent run off turn two. French battled back on the bottom and the two exchanged the lead twice more.

The clash continued to the final lap. The short way around proved to be enough for French, who held off Reid by less than a nose for his fourth victory of the season. Mills finished third ahead of Tyler Parker (No.8 D&T Lawn Maintenance) and Adam Chapman (No.07 Int’l Truckload Services). Mills and Brady Greer (No.94 Greer Excavating) won the qualifying heats.

Freeman Rolls Van to Checkers

The Gord’s Water Vantastics provided some exciting and wacky racing in their 12-lap feature. The vans raced side-by-side for nearly four laps without incident as each driver refused to give an inch. Mike Freeman drove his No.51 to the lead following the only restart on lap four.

Freeman checked out in front of the field over the final seven circuits, but Mark McDonald (No.28) and Tom Henry (No.19) battled for second, with McDonald narrowly taking second on the final corner.
