STAYNER, ON- Eager for redemption after a disappointing mechanical DNF in APC United Late Model Series competition last Friday, Brandon Watson looks ahead to Wednesday’s event at Flamboro Speedway for a chance to put his season back on course.
“Any time we have a race that didn’t go our way, all I can think about is getting back on track and improving,” explains Watson. “For me, the quick turnaround is perfect. There isn’t much that we could have done to prevent our mechanical problems on Friday – but there’s a lot that I can do to get us back to the podium. That’s the goal for Wednesday”
Watson suffered an uncharacteristic 26th place finish when an oil line fitting broke, relegating him to the role of spectator shortly past the 100-lap events midway mark.
The DNF was Watson’s second in three starts with the tour. However, despite his family-run team’s recent run of poor fortune, the third-generation star is not yet ready to give up on his championship hopes with the upstart series.
“It’s still really early to worry about where we are in the points,” shrugs the former Super Late Model champion. “Two DNFs in three starts is not the way we saw our season starting out, but as tight as things are on the tour, we’re a couple of strong performances away from being right back in the mix”
For Watson, Wednesday’s APC Series-sanctioned event provides an ideal avenue to generate some much-needed momentum – especially considering his top-3 finish in his last appearance at the facility less than a month ago.
“Our Flamboro package is very good. We were happy with the way that car reacted when we were there a few weeks ago,” says Watson in reference to Round 2 of the series at Flamboro on June 6th. “If it wasn’t for a few restarts where we got hung up on the outside, I think we would have had something for the top-2. Hopefully we can put ourselves back in a podium position on Wednesday”
“This is as tight of a field as I’ve ever raced against,” insists the fan favourite. “Every team running in the top-15 on this tour has a legitimate chance to win. There aren’t too many slouches on this roster. It keeps you working hard, that’s for sure. Because you know the guys in the pit stall next to you are working just as hard to beat you.”
