STAYNER, ON- Third-generation racer Brandon Watson will be back behind the wheel of a Super Late Model this weekend, when he returns to the ARCA/CRA Super Series at Winchester Speedway for the ‘Winchester 100’ on Monday, September 1st.
After sitting out events at Kalamazoo and Flat Rock, Watson is ready to make up for lost time on the legendary high banks of Winchester.
“Taking most of August off was tough, but it was something we really had to do”, explains Watson. “We had hit a bit of a slump, where it felt as though nothing was going our way. We’re a small team, with a limited budget, so it definitely had an effect”
“My Dad and I talked it over, and we figured it was best to take a break, go through the car nose to tail, get reorganized and come back to finish the season strong”
Appearing rejuvenated, Watson will enter Winchester in search of his second top-5 of the ARCA/CRA Super Series season.
“We just need a good finish to get our momentum going for the rest of the season”, says the soft-spoken 21-year old. “Anything can happen at Winchester. It’s so fast, and things can change in the blink of an eye there”
“I’ve never raced a Super [Late Model] there, but when we went there in the Pro Late Model the speed is what I really remember”, continues Watson. “It’s one of the fastest tracks I’ve ever competed at. This is one race I’ve been looking forward to all season”
Winchester’s reputation as a speedway that’s tough on equipment precedes it, and Watson is quick to note his plans of respecting the track and implementing a patient, conservative strategy.
“You can take your car home in a basket if you’re not careful”, explains Watson. “We’re going to hang back and let the race sort itself out in the early goings. There will be time to make some moves in the second half of the race. The first 50-laps is going to be all about dodging the craziness and saving our equipment”
