ACTON, ON- If his 19th place finish in Sunset Speedway Mini Stock competition last Saturday has at all discouraged Brandon McFerran, the reigning track champion is not letting affect his outlook for this weekend’s return to action.
The finish marked McFerran’s first night outside of the top-10 all season, and resulted in his being ousted from the top of the division points standings for the first time in over a year and a half. Still, ‘The Astronaut’ maintains that these disappoints are unavoidable in short track racing.
“You can’t be the hero every night,” shrugs the charismatic 16-year old. “We’ve learned that lesson the hard way a few times before. At this point, last weekend isn’t important. What’s important is how we come back from it”
McFerran will enter the evening’s races in a three-way tie for second in points, alongside fellow former titlists Warren Paxton and Doug Butler.
“I can’t remember the points standings ever being this tight in the Mini Stock division,” muses McFerran. “There’s less room for error now than there’s ever been. By the time we get to August, I think there’s a really good chance that the standings look a lot different”
“Someone’s going to slip up and get left behind,” continues the third-generation racer. “When you have this calibre of competition, it really only takes one bad night or one wreck to turn your whole season on it’s ear. We just have to do everything in our power to make sure it isn’t us”
For now, McFerran will look to generate some much-needed momentum with a victory in Mini Stock competition tomorrow night.
“I think a win on Saturday would go a long way in reminding this team of just how good we can be,” says the high-school student. “Last weekend was a frustrating couple of days for us – I’m looking forward to putting it in the past and the best way to do that is a trip to victory lane.”
