ACTON, ON- After enjoying a breakout 2013 season, complete with multiple victories and a top-10 finish at the famed Autumn Colours Classic, third-generation competitor Brandon McFerran has set his sights on an impressive follow-up in 2014.
“2013 really taught us who we are as a team”, says McFerran as he works to put the finishing touches on his Ford Mustang. “We had our fair share of adversity at the start of the season, but we battled through it. Once we found a combination that worked, it felt like the sky was the limit. Walking away with 4 feature wins at Sunset was more than we could have ever expected”.
If the 2013 campaign was one focused largely on seat time and gaining a ‘feel’ for the car, the 2014 season is intended to allow the 15-year old to showcase all that he’s learned.
“We’re aiming for the Sunset Speedway championship this year”, responds McFerran matter-of-factly when asked his plans. “I whole-heartedly believe that we have a car that can contend, a set-up that works and a team that won’t give up. In my mind, that’s a winning combination”.
‘The Astronaut’ is quick to point out that maintaining a weekly strategy will play an essential role in his push for a first career divisional title.
“Consistency is key”, McFerran explains. “We can’t let emotions get the best of us. Because all it takes is a few bad finishes and all of a sudden your season has gotten away from you. It’s going to be important that we unload every week remembering what we’re here to do. Sunset has one of the best Mini Stock divisions in the province, and if we want to run at the front, we’re going to have to bring our best effort every single week”.
In addition to their weekly commitments at Sunset Speedway, McFerran has also set his sights on a pair of ‘Crown Jewel’ invitational events.
“We’ve had a great run at the Autumn Colours Classic the past two seasons”, affirms McFerran in reference to Peterborough Speedway season-ending 3 day event. “Back to back top-6 finishes, we had a great car but just couldn’t put it all together. I’m hoping we can change that this year. We also hope to put a great run together at Kawartha’s Mini Stock Nationals event. They’re offering one heck of a purse that should probably draw the best of the best, everyone will remember who wins the first ever ‘nationals’, which is added motivation”.
Brandon McFerran will kick-off his 2014 season at Sunset Speedway’s inaugural Great Lakes Concrete Spring Derby Invitational on May 3rd. Fans can keep up with Brandon via his Brandon McFerran Racing page on Facebook, or by following him on Twitter @BrandonMcFerran.
