ACTON, ON- After struggling through handling issues early in the 2014 season, third-generation competitor Brandon McFerran has hit his stride of late, carving out two victories and a runner-up finish in his last three Sunset Speedway starts.
“It’s feeling like everything is starting to come together all at once”, smiled McFerran at a recent testing session. “This is the product of weeks of hard work. My Dad and the rest of this team worked nonstop to bring this car up to snuff from where it was earlier in the season”
“I can’t tell you how many different setup combinations we’ve experimented with to finally find the one that works”, continued ‘The Astronaut’.
Riding a two-race win streak, McFerran entered June 14th’s event eager to tighten his grip on the Sunset point standings. Starting in the 16th position – by virtue of winning the previous week’s A Main – the 15-year old was prepared for a long night.
“This division is full of some of the best talent I’ve ever raced against”, stressed McFerran. “It’s hard enough winning here when you start at the front, much less coming from the 8th row”
“I knew we had to just bide our time, and try and make room to come through the field”, continued McFerran. “We made a couple of adjustments just before we rolled out for the feature, and the car responded and came to life around halfway. From there, I was able to hit my marks and make a run to second”
“I’d like to think we might have had something for the leader if we hadn’t run out of laps”, added McFerran.
Thanks to his recent hot streak, McFerran will enter the second quarter of the 2014 season atop the points standings, a feat he had yet to experience prior to now.
“I’ve raced since I was 6 years old, and I’ve never led the points”, smiled McFerran. “It’s a different feeling, that’s for sure. I’ve been chasing my whole career, now all of a sudden I’m the one being chased”
“Ultimately, where we are in the standings doesn’t change a thing for our team”, said the well-spoken high-school student. “We’re still going to work hard through the week, get this car as close to perfect as we can, and come out on Saturday’s hoping to rack up as many wins as we can”
“We try to keep it simple”, closed McFerran with a smile.
