ACTON, ON- Defending Mini Stock champion Brandon McFerran will unload at Sunset Speedway a mere 7-points behind current division leader Jordan Howse. As the season draws to a close, ‘The Astronaut’ will look for a pivotal victory in August 15th competition to help propel his family-run effort back into the top spot in the standings.
“At this stage of the game, I think it’s going to be tough to take the points lead unless we start winning,” offers McFerran. “Podium finishes are only going to get us so far. Consistency has put us in a spot to contend, but the only way we’re going to take control of these points standings is by winning some races. So, obviously, that’s the goal for Saturday”
McFerran had led the Sunset Speedway points for a year and a half – including his dominant 2014 championship run – before surrendering the top spot this July. Still, the third-generation racer insists his team is every bit as potent as it was during its time at the top.
“I don’t think it’s a championship hangover as much as it’s a sign that the rest of the division has done their homework,” explains the Acton, ON driver when asked about his 2015 season. “What was getting the job done last year isn’t enough anymore. So, we’ve been doing our best to think outside of the box and stay one step ahead of these guys. It’s all about trial and error”
Trailing by 7 points with 4 events remaining on the Sunset schedule, McFerran notes that his team is in a much different frame of mind than they were at the closing of 2014.
“It’s an entirely different feeling being the team working to close that gap,” says the well-spoken high school student with a slight smile. “Last year was spent looking over our shoulders and wondering if we had a big enough lead to win the championship. This year we’re hoping that we have enough nights left to make a play to go back to back”
“We just have to remember that these guys at the top are not untouchable,” continues McFerran. “They can be beat. Anyone can be beat. [Jordan] Howse, [Doug] Butler and Andy [Kamrath] have all been really strong this season, but we’re every bit as good as they are. We put in the same hours they do, and have equipment that’s just as strong as theirs”
“The difference is made up on race day. And it’s important that we remember that.”
