INNISFIL, ON- Fifteen-year-old Brandon McFerran wrapped up a banner year on September 13th, clinching the 2014 Sunset Speedway Mini Stock track championship.
The Acton, ON driver needed only to take the green flag in the 35-lap contest to earn the division championship, after compiling 8 feature victories over the course of the 2014 season.
“We made a plan coming into this season that we wanted to take a run at the championship”, smiled McFerran post-race. “It was a lot of work, a tonne of fun and man does it feel good to finally lock it up”
“I’ve been racing since I was 5 years old and I’ve never even been a points leader”, continued the well-spoken high school student. “I didn’t really know what to do or how to feel when we took the points lead earlier this year. My Dad’s been a huge help. He sets this car up, he busts his ass in the shop with me all week and he really coached me through this whole experience. I wouldn’t be anywhere without him”
After a frustrating opening month to the season, McFerran’s family-owned operation made wholesale changes and welcomed noted setup specialist Tim Ellas to the team.
“I can’t say enough about Tim Ellas”, said McFerran. “The man’s a genius and I’m honoured to have had the chance to work alongside him this season. I don’t even have the time to explain just how much I’ve learned from him. He’s definitely been a game changer for our entire program”
Upon accepting his championship honours after a 3rd place finish in the final feature of the regular season, ‘The Astronaut’ made it clear he’s not done for the year just yet.
“It’s awesome to get the points championship locked up, but we’ve definitely still got some work to do. There are a few big races coming up that we have our eye on, so we’ll party tonight and then it’s back to the shop tomorrow morning”
“We’ll be in the field [at Sunset Speedway] on Thursday night for the $1200 to win show”, confirmed the third-generation star. “That’s as much money as I think I’ll ever race for in a Mini Stock, so this ‘ol #64 will be polished up and ready to go”
