BRAMPTON, ON- Just one week removed from a frustrating outing in NASCAR Whelen All-American Series competition on August 1st, Sunset Speedway contender Billy Zardo is retooled and focused on getting back to work this weekend and taking aim at his first feature win of the 2015 season.
His August 1st outing saw Zardo running in the top-5 in both of the evening’s 35-lap features, only to be caught in a pair of incidents in the later stages of the events and forced to settle for back-to-back 15th place finishes.
“We were a lot better than the results ended up showing at the end of the night,” offers Zardo when asked about the two races. “Believe it or not, that was actually the best the car has worked all season. It seems like, for the last month, every weekend has been the best the car has been all year. The guys have hit on something, and now we’re at the point where we’re tweaking and changing the small stuff to get it even better”
The third-generation star is quick to explain that, while the evening’s results were less than satisfactory, he has no intentions of carrying a grudge into this Saturday.
“I mean, I wish it hadn’t happened, but what’s the point in being mad?,” shrugs the fan favourite. “That’s racing, man. That’s all part of the game. If you’re only here for the trophies, the victory lane photos and shaking peoples’ hands then someone didn’t prepare you properly for what this is all about”
“I talked with the other drivers post-race and we’re all good,” continues ‘Z3’. “I don’t believe for a second that someone got into us on purpose – so, a little bit of understanding goes a long way. Now, we look ahead to this Saturday and we move past all the negativity”
When asked about his chances for a trip to victory lane, the Brampton, ON native notes that a strong finish will rely heavily on his qualifying effort.
“We’re going to have an even better car this week than we did last week,” explains Zardo. “Our time trial efforts have been getting better. Now, we just need to find a way to put this car on the pole. We have a car fast enough to set fast time and we absolutely have a car fast enough to win a race”
“This field is stacked, and with every car you have to pass it takes a little bit out of you. I truly believe that if we can find a way to put this car on the front row, it will make all the difference for us. That’s our strategy for Saturday night.”
