ST. JOHN’S (September 14, 2017) – With one more day of competition remaining, pressure is building for all who are looking to win their classes and divisions in the annual tarmac rally. Thursday’s stages separated competitors in one division, but brought others even closer together.
In Classic division, Targa veterans Jack Rogers and C.J. Strupp have opened up a 48 second lead on second place Bryan Bursey and Martin Cadieux. This lead will be tough to close on Friday, but Bursey and Cadieux will try their best to do that.
In Modern division, first and second are separated by only two seconds, while third is only 20 seconds back of that. The battle between the team of Targa veterans John Hume Jr. and Justin Crant and rookie driver Kirk Jones and Targa champion Corey Prosser will certainly be entertaining to watch.
In Open division, Mark Rittenhouse and Mark Laitenberger lead Josh Collins and Matt Collins by 11 seconds going into the final stages Friday. This division is certainly up for grabs over the final stages Friday.
In Grand Touring division, John Hume Sr. and Christina Kroner are battling it out with teammates Craig MacMullen and David Jenkins for the title. All teams received penalty times Thursday so the chance for changes in those standings is quite possible on the final day of the Targa.
Friday’s stages include John Curran Memorial (Colliers and Conception Harbour), Marysvale, Turks Gut, and Brigus. The official finish will occur on George Street in St. John’s with a car show on the street from 7pm – 9pm.
Owned and operated by Newfoundland International Motorsports Limited, Targa Newfoundland is one of three internationally recognized Targa motorsports events in the world. The 2017 competition will start in St. John’s on September 10th and concludes back in the capital on September 15th. The annual rally will cover more than 1,500 kilometres of the challenging, twisty roads of the central and eastern portion of Newfoundland, including over 430 kilometres of closed-road, flat-out Targa stages.
